Crime Ranking Out of Touch With Current Data

Thursday, December 15, 2011 @ 4:00 AM

Graph shows  decline in serious crime in Prince George in 2011. (graph- courtesy RCMP)

Prince George, B.C.- For the second straight year, Prince George has been named the most dangerous city in Canada by Maclean’s magazine, but the stats do not reflect what has been happening over the past year in Prince George says RCMP Superintendent Eric Stubbs.

Maclean’s magazine bases its selections on the 2010 Crime Severity Index , a method that assigns a certain weight to types of crime.   The weight given to a type of crime is correlated to the weight of a sentence handed out by the courts. So, it stands to reason the most serious crime would be murder, which carries an automatic life sentence, the heaviest sentence that can be handed down.

With Prince George having recorded 7 homicides last year, that meant its crime severity index would have been high because of the weight carried by each of those homicides.

The ranking comes at a time when Prince George has seen some significant progress in dealing with its most serious issues.

So far in 2011, there have been no homicides, and serious assaults have been reduced by about one third of what they had been last year.

There have also been reductions in other areas of crime as noted below:

In 2010, Prince George had an overall Crime Severity Index of 177. If compared to other B.C. communities, Prince George would have ranked 16th. Maclean’s magazine  only examines  those communities with a population of 10,000 or more.

Still, Mayor Shari Green says being labelled “ the Most Dangerous Community” in the country makes it more challenging  when it comes to recruiting new businesses and people to Prince George. “It’s a challenge for us as a community and it starts with ourselves , our own citizens need to feel safe in Prince George, and they’ve told me they’re concerned and they know its related to the drug and gang activity in Prince George. The average person in Prince George who is not participating in that high risk lifestyle, I believe, feels relatively safe for themselves, but certainly they know that this stuff is going on in their community and they don’t like it. So, within our own community we need to ensure that we’ve got confidence in the police and the hard work they are doing, and the 2011 stats show that. So we need to tell that story to the outside world and to make sure that all our partners Tourism Prince George, Initiatives Prince George, and our business community and everyone who works so hard to make Prince George a better place, certainly our two Ministers ( Cabinet Ministers Bell and Bond) we all know what the real story   is about living in Prince George and we need to make sure we continue to  tell it.”

When it comes to being labelled the most dangerous community in Canada, Superintendent Eric Stubbs says it is a label he doesn’t like for a variety of reasons, “A, because I’m the police chief in this community. Two,  I live in the community and three, most importantly, I don’t believe it’s true, I don’t believe we are the most dangerous community in Canada.”

Comments

Lets get real. Years ago, when he was still on the air, Arsenio Hall announced the highest B&E rate per 1000 people in North America was in Prince George British Columbia.(where ever that is he stated)
When you have gang bangers in local gyms wearing flack jackets in the afternoon there is definitely an issue here.
Now our new mayor has to pay back all the business that put up big money for her election. Sherri Green said yesterday- we don’t have money for more police. I guess not when she has to line the pockets that paid for her election.

And some years ago MP Heddy Fry announced that “in fact, as we speak, they are burning crosses on frontlawns in Prince George British Columbia.” It made the headlines across North America and really put P.G. on the map! We got a Ku-Klux-Klan reputation…

I believe she refused to retract her baseless remark (made in parliament) and even claimed that she had a letter from the mayor attesting to the truth of the matter!

Of course, the letter story was baseless as well, because she did not produce proof of having it.

We don’t burn crosses and we are NOT the most dangerous community in Canada!

Heddy Fry’s comment’s came from a story about a Prince George County.I’m not sure but I’m thinking it was in Georgia. She didn’t read far enough down the page before she smeared us in question period.

It’s probably the fluoride in the water.

LOL

They`ve probably mistaken us for another Prince George BC…we should change the name of our city(small town BC) to Mad Savage…

Change the name to Macleans. Then I’m sure we will fall in the ranking’s.

“When you have gang bangers in local gyms wearing flack jackets in the afternoon there is definitely an issue here.” Thats a crock plain and simple! My guess is you dont even know who your looking at cuz their probably in Law Enforcement working out on their lunch hour and you jump to conclusions and think their “Gang bangers” LOL get real! Did you vote by the way cuz I see tons of loudmouths spewing off already about Green but few of you actually voted!

Prince George’s County is in Maryland.

Heddy Fry is a friggin’ national treasure. The Mayor should invite her to visit just for the fun of it.

What we need is more jails and more policemen and that should solve the problem. President Harper is on our side so lets go.
Cheers

Duffer:”It’s probably the fluoride in the water. LOL”

No surprise there.

(NaturalNews): It is becoming increasingly difficult for fluoride fanatics to defend the practice of artificial water fluoridation, thanks to a plethora of new reports highlighting its many dangers. A new study published in the journal Neurologia reveals that chronic exposure to, and ingestion of, the synthetic fluoride chemicals added to water supplies can cause serious brain and neurological damage. Confirming several others recently published, the study further exposes the lunacy of deliberately adding toxic chemicals to the water supply in the name of saving teeth.

I suggest that we have had the same number of police in Pr George since 2006, with the exception of the Drug Enforcement Unit (or whatever the hell they are called) located in the Carter Light Industrial Area.

A lot of the improvements to the stats could be attributed to this unit.

So are we really any better off now than we were in 2006. Some stats are up and some are down. The real question is, is what the hell are we doing about it.

In a town of 75000 people when 90% or more are law abiding citizens, it should not be too hard to control the other 10% or less.

Lets be realistic. We know that the police are always stating that the suspect is **known to the Police**. Is it the court system that is broken?? Are we letting to many criminals out on parole, and allowing them to continue to commit crimes.

Fact of the matter is the Police, and the Justice system have a laissez faire attitude toward crime. They are well protected from the actual brunt of criminal activity. It is the people who are being robbed, beaten, and terrorized that are concerned.

We need more attention to all types of crime, and less attention to traffic fines, which generate revenue, while other crimes and incarceration costs the Government money.

If you do the crime, you do the time, seems to pretty well cover it all. If most of these criminals were given stiff jail sentences, we would get an immediate reduction in crime stats. Williams Lake has already done this, with mind boggling effect.

Palopu, you Sir are rapidly becoming an amzement to me in terms of your knee jerk, stupid comments! Are you naive enough to think the the RCMP officers who go to work eneryday are happy with the courts? Yes your so right, theres nothing they love more than arresting someone, doing hours of paperwork, collecting witness statements and evidence….only to submit an RCC (Thats a REPORT TO CROWN COUNCIL) and THEN be told the crown is NOT proceeding cuz they dont have the resources or time etc etc. And your other brilliant comment is the typical “Stop writing me tickets….why aren’t ya out there gettin the REAL Criminals?!” Well guess what, if your speeding, which could ultimatley end in someone dieing in a car crash cuz of your stupidity behind the wheel, YOU ARE BREAKING THE LAW!! And Williams Lake City Council has ZERO sway over the Crown’s office, they are ranked very high as well so your comments are just baffling, do some research before hitting the key pad!

I would have to say that the problem is in the justice system if the criminals are known to the police, repeat offenders = money in the lawyers pockets. judges don’t get paid by the client but their pay does increase as they move along to the top courts of canada. police don’t benefit from the repeat offender if anything their safety is lessened and the pay stays the same. Yup, it sure looks like the lawyer is the big winner here.

Prince George is known for knuckle-dragging neanderthals.

Maybe it`s the toxic air and poison, you know, the toxic air your fearless leaders hid from you.

Prince George is also the cancer capital of Canada..

Must be true, you keep electing Pat(pledge pin)Bell and Shirley Whirley solicitor general/attorney general and Crusty Clark anal cavity examiner Bond.

Happy tourism industry.

Karma folks, karma!

Zuess88. As usual we blame the court system for not processing the charges laid by the Police. Tell me Zuess88 why do we get this information from you???

If in fact the break down is with the Court System, and if in fact after filing all the RCC’s they are told they will not proceed, then it follows that its pretty obvious that the system itself is at fault.

If the system is at fault, why do we have high paid RCMP Officers talking about the stats, and the criminals in the Prince George area, and they do not mention one word **NOT ONE WORD** that the problem lies with with Justice System. Why is that. Why do you have the inside knowledge, and the Mayor, and the Superintendent, of Police, and the Attorney General, etc; etc; do not mention that this is the problem.

Seems to me what you are saying, is that these people and the Government are fully aware of the problem, but prefer to have these criminals go free, rather than incarcerate them.

If that is so then what are we the citizens of

Prince George supposed to do. Just throw up our hands and give up???

You cant have it both ways. If the system is broke fix it. But dont blame the system, but refuse to bring the problem into the open because someone might not get a promotion.

Williams Lake police and others put their resources in taking action against the prolific offenders, and over time had them incarcerated. This resulted in an immediate reduction is thier crime stats.

We could do the same. People running around towns in BC shooting guns and killing people ranks right up their with speeding offences. Do you ever notice that the speeders always get a fine, and other penalties, while the criminal gets to walk.

To me people need to start taking responsibility for themselves. People blaming this person and that person. look at yourself in the mirror and stop blaming the system. It’s our faults because it’s this way. Come on, ya got folks actually blaming the system for not being tough on crime, when yet this country’s crime rate has been going down for years. To me raise your kids properly then we won’t have any problems. Don’t let them run you. I am no parent, but I know an idiot when I see one. Don’t go blame the system for your screw ups, simple math.

The RCMP is looking for a person who got caught on security video robbing a jewellery store – brandishing a gun, smashing the display cases and firing a shot at an employee. He gets away, taking tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise. It’s the third time that this store has been robbed in the same year.

Fine. The robber is known to the police and the public is warned on the radio that he is a known repeat offender having 34 previous convictions, some of them involving violent behaviour.

(This actually happened!).

What is wrong with the “system” which enabled this person to be at large committing yet another crime???

What is wrong with me that I am asking the above question and daring to create an impression of laying blame?

I am looking in the mirror for a solution.

Palopu, Thank you for proving me right by whining over and over with ZERO facts and lots of accusations. Yes Braniac it’s “All about Cops making money!!’ LOL Go back to the train station cuz your lost when it comes to logic! Here’s a free lesson…..ITS POLITICIANS THAT MAKE DECISIONS WITH REGARDS TO LAWS AND AMOUNTS OF JUDGES!! Why arent you mentioning them? No you use the simple minded approach of blame what you see so if ya see a Police Officer and the crime rates high….well it’s THEIR FAULT!! Its politicians that control the purse strings, we need more judges here in P.G to expedite trials and take the stress off the already swamped ones we have, we need about 2-3 more Crown Attorneys…..and you need POLITICIANS to change the Laws to make mandatory sentences and harsher jail times…..’ITS NOT THE COPS writing a speeding ticket thats the problem, THATS THEIR JOB!

Well said DISSIDENT!

And they want to serve beer in the stands in the Multiplex! Brilliant!

One area I think they can make more of an impact or improvement is their education for children. I heard something about getting in there in grade 8, get in their grade 4, then 6, then 8. The message needs to be repeatedly pounded in. Not the whole answer, but an area for improvement.

A…two…three

lol

Oh, and we here in PG just let them go when the trial takes too long… I did have a question about that too if anyone knows…do they get the proceeds of crime confiscated at time of arrest back if the case is tossed out? Not the bags of coke but the jewelry, cash, guns…?

Did anyone see the infographic about The World According to Murder? http://bit.ly/s5l7I1

It maps out the 10 murder hotspots worldwide and Canada isn’t even on it, so at least that’s positive.

While it is always disheartening to read these kinds of “reports” it is important to keep some perspective. The fact is that you are a thousand times more likely to be involved in a car accident than you are to be shot, EVEN if you ARE in the drug trade. Zeuss88 is also absolutely correct regarding the information shared about funding and Crown Counsel positions. As a person who is connected to both members of the RCMP and Crown I can tell you that they are working as hard as they can with the resources they have, only to see amazingly lenient sentences or cases thrown out because they took too long to go to trial. And for the record, although I moved away from PG a few years ago, I would move back in a heartbeat! At least you don’t have roving gangs of teenagers drugging and gang raping girls or beating each other with baseball bats over disagreements!

Oh, and another thing. While there is certainly a chance anywhere in the city that you might be the victim of a B&E, the vast majority of crime is always perpetrated by a small minority ON EACH OTHER! That doesn’t mean that we can or should ignore it but realistically, the general public is not at risk. And like the article said, there are NO homicides so far this year. I can name several lower mainland communities that can NOT make the same claim!
