Prince George, B.C.- Although students have been using the facility since September, the  new trades training centre at the College of New Caledonia has been officially opened.

The new trades centre is a $21 million dollar project made possible by the College raising $1 million and the Federal and Provincial Governments splitting the balance. It is aimed at being a centre where high demand trades will be taught with a view to reaching the high demands for skilled trades people in the not too distant future.

It is estimated there will be more than a million jobs available in the next decade as baby boomers retire. 78% of those jobs will require some level of post secondary education. With the trade centre,  it is hoped those who are trained in the north, will stay in the north and help respond to the expected high demand for trades people as the mining and natural gas sectors open up.

The old trades centre on the original campus is 49 years old and part of it will likely be demolished and the space used for parking. The remainder of the old building will be used for CNC maintenance .

The John Brink Trades Centre remains an integral part of the CNC campus in Prince George and the programs offered there will continue.

Too bad the Welders can’t use it until they get the ventilation fixed. I wonder who is paying for that?

So are they using the existing welding booths until the new ones are properly installed?

I did not realize they would be tearing the old buildings down. I wonder who in the community could use them more or less as they are and pay to maintain them for their use?

How about housing a seismic shake table for the Wood Innovation Centre to test scale models of high rise buildings as well as other destructive testing of full scale components of such buildings?

How about a grow op for tree seedling?

Maybe a black box theatre for the arts program.

A recreation centre with a bowling alley?

A relocated Studio 2880 + PGSO + PG Conservatory of Music.

There, that’s a start. Throw some more out there and see which might be worth while exploring more.

Hey, how about an addiction recovery centre?
