Thursday, December 29, 2011 @ 1:17 PM

Victoria, B.C.- Premier Christy Clark and Solicitor General Shirley Bond have issued the following statement on the death of a volunteer firefighter in Enderby.

"We are deeply saddened to learn one of B.C.’s volunteer firefighters, Daniel Botkin, died while combating a blaze in Enderby," said Premier Christy Clark. "This is a heartbreaking day for his family, his community, and indeed all firefighters
throughout the province.   "Firefighters set an incredible standard of heroism. They run toward dangers when the rest of us flee. And they respond to each call knowing they may risk their lives in order to save others."

"To volunteer for this duty, as Mr. Botkin did and hundreds of other volunteer firefighters do on a daily basis, epitomizes selfless devotion to the safety of their neighbours and communities," said Solicitor General Bond Shirley Bond.

"On behalf of all British Columbians, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Botkin’s spouse and family, and to his fire hall colleagues. We also express our deepest gratitude to firefighters across B.C. for their bravery and commitment to keeping our
communities safe."

Botkin died  in an explosion at the scene of the fire.  A second volunteer firefighter was injured in the blast.  The RCMP, B.C. Coroner’s office and WorkSafe B.C. are investigationg this tragic incident.

The accidental death of this very young man is tragic.

It really turns me off when politicians try to make political hay on the back of someones tragedy though. Tawdry.

I think it’s appropriate for the provincial government to show that they care, whether it be Liberal, NDP or any other party in power. My condolences to his family and fellow fire fighters.
