Council Says No to Helping CHBA with Energy Fair
Prince George, B.C.- The Canadian Home Builders Association has a special plan for its Home Show this April, as it will feature an "Energy Fair".
That energy fair will present several speakers who can talk with home owners about the latest products to reduce energy consumption.
The CHBA came to Council asking that the City waive it’s rental fee of $8,000 as a contribution to the energy fair. That request came hot on the heels of the City being recognized for all it’s efforts in promoting greenhouse gas reduction and reduced energy use.
But the answer for funding was no.
Neither Councillor Dave Wilbur nor Cameron Stolz could support forgiving the rental fee at a time when the City is heading into a core review and looking for ways to reduce spending. Both said cutting revenue would not fit with that plan.
Councillor Lyn Hall suggested the CHBA look to work with Initiatives Prince George to see if there is an opportunity there for a partnership.

So is there any science proving effects of greenhouse gas or what the effect is. Just what greenhouse gas are you talking about. Oh I get it, the word of the decade.
Where does Initiatives Prince George get there money from?
Nice to see them turn down a bid for money. There is always people around with their hands out. Time to close the purse strings.
IPG better not give them the money either, as their money comes from PG Taxpayers. They would be far better off, to cancel the speakers. Who would listen to them anyway???
Exactly, guesswhat!!
However, they are in relative control of the projects and programs they run and this type of thing might actually fit under something they are promoting.
Seamutt, greenhouse gas or not, energy costs money and it seems reasonable to me for a home show to promote ideas and products as to how they might be able to reduce their energy costs. That is one of the broadd purposes of a home show. Not all are as smart as you so that they vcan figure it out for themselves.
However, who should pay for it?
Hydro, pellet suppliers, stove suppliers, thermostat suppliers, weatherstripping suppliers, contractors to do installation, etc. etc.
It is their service and products which will be promoted so as far as I am concerned, they are the ones to pay.
I’m with you seamutt. Greenhouse gases have effects(co2 in this case)but the main cause of our current change?
I believe we should be prepared for climate change warm or cold and a big part of this is reducing our consumption. However, the climate has always been changing. Now all of a sudden just our actions with co2 are changing the climate at a rate that has been recorded over and over in climate history.
If it is not one department it will be another one for tax dollars. Don’t forget those grants that are out there also.
This is one reason I do not like the idea of the City starting such, what shall I say…arms lengths companies?
Who are the speakers? What expertise have they? If this is important then why are these indivuduals not using other ways to get the information out? Not enough info again?
I agree with gus. Let the suppliers etc pay for the speakers. Enough out of the taxpayers pockets. Does the Canadian Home Association not have a membership fee etc? Will the price to attend go up?
Just asking………..
Ah yes one mentions C02, greenhouse, climate change is to hold out ones hand to grab some of the gravy on the scam before it dries up, to wit don’t charge us fees. Will their products be cheaper, ya right when pigs fly. Energy efficiency is a smart way to go at any time and now is a good time seeing as the earths climate is changing, changing into a multi decade cooling period.
Using alternative energy like wood pellets will do nothing but raise your energy bill.
It takes about 3 – 40# bags of wood pellets
to produce a gigajoule of energy. Price
for the pellets $4.00 to $5.00 for a 40#
bag. Total cost $12.00 – $15.00 per gigajoule.
Natural gas is selling at at the Chicago henry hub for $3.00 a gigajoule. Even with our so called cheap made in BC gas the homeowner’s cost is under $9.00 a gigajoule. Burning wood pellets, geo-thermal, or heat pumps for home heating just does not make economic sense.
“That energy fair will present several speakers who can talk with home owners about the latest products to reduce energy consumption.”
Those several speakers are usually representatives from companies which are promoting new technology products. They try to persuade homeowners to spend big money upgrading their homes and new home builders to spend the extra money to buy them.
The city should not fund a fair rental simply because a subject is promoted which is brought up at every fair of this kind anyways.
It’s true that there have been global climate changes in the past, but this is the first time in history that there are seven billion people living on this planet who must try to minimize it and cope with the latest event. If the population is indeed responsible for some part of it, let’s be smart and honest about it instead of sticking our heads in the sand.
PG are you talking warming or cooling?
Stick your head out the door and look at the date and figure it out seamutt….. LOL
So does this mean that the City is actually not in partnership now?
Could CHBA remove the 10-30% discounts for their members and be able to pay for the rental fee themselves?

Seems strange that if I advertise my business or products, that I bear the cost of that advertising.
Bigger companies can apply for government hand outs to promote their products or services?
Maybe I should rethink this and apply to governmental organisations for my advertising costs too!
