Prince George, B.C.-  The new Cancer Centre, under construction on Lethbridge Street in Prince George, is in the finishing stages.

Set to open later this year, a sneak peek tour for the media today shows how far construction has come along.  A timelapse video of construction can be viewed at: www.bccancer.bc.ca/RS/north

The Centre is being built at a cost of  about $100 million dollars and  will feature a  roof top garden which will be  a  ‘living’ roof — the first of its kind in Prince George.

The new, two storey, 5,000-square-metre (54,000-square-foot) Centre used nearly 656,000 board feet of wood in its construction.

City residents interested in learning more about the new cancer centre are invited to a public information session next Thursday, January 19th at the Coast Inn of the North from 7pm – 9pm in the Summit Room.

They advertise the amount of wood used in the construction of the building but what is used for the main support construction. Don’t get me wrong I think it is a beautiful building, but I am wondering if it is a bit of false advertisement.

Just to answer your question the main structure is steel framing and concrete. The wood used in the construction of the building was left more for the pretties , so to speak. What would have been better would have been the employment of local companies rather than ones that are home based in other cities besides ours. That 100 million would have perhaps helped grow our own community and the pockets of local workers. Don’t get me wrong, some of the contracted companies hired local and also contracted out locally, but at such a cut wage, some were forced to take such work to support thier families. It would have been a lot better to see the contracts awarded to PG based companies.
