Two Quesnel Snowmobilers Airlifted to VGH
Quesnel, B.C.- Two Quesnel men are being airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital after a serious snowmobile crash in that city last night.
Quesnel RCMP’s Media Relations Officer, Constable Krista Vrolyk, says RCMP and BC Ambulance Services responded to a report of a collision on Lombardie Drive shortly after 10pm.
Vrolyk says investigators have determined that an unlicensed snowmobile traveling at a high rate of speed struck a parked vehicle resulting in very serious injuries to the sled’s two occupants. The helmet of one of the men flew off during the collision and was located on the ground more than twenty feet away.
A 26 year old male and a 34 year old male were initially transported to Quesnel’s G.R. Baker Hospital with multiple fractures to the lower limbs. They have now been airlifted to the trauma unit of Vancouver General Hospital. Their condition is described as serious but non life threatening at this time.
The cause of this crash remains under investigation although speed is believed to be a factor. Quesnel RCMP encourage snowmobilers to play it safe. Stick to well groomed paths and be aware that ANY motor vehicle that is operated on a public roadway requires insurance – this includes snowmobiles and ATVs. Operate within your limits and ability and always ensure that your helmet is properly secured.

What? Speed is considered to be a factor in this crash?
Didn’t we just read a story about a speed related fatlity in the Fraser Canyon?
SPEED KILLS….
Nuff said….!
Can’t fix stupid.
Speed doesn’t kill!
Unskilled drivers that crash do though.
“Stick to well groomed paths”
Why?
Another sad but avoidable collision I sent this letter to some news outlets last night. I hope people will start listening
Please if you are going to ride your snowmobile or quad on the street with is illegal and dangerous at least have the consideration to ride in a safe mannerr, at a safe speed, with lights operational after dark. Remember it is not only your life that is being endangered there are others on the road walking driving and in some cases children playing. Every year there are injuries and some deaths due to the extremely dangerous way some people enjoy this activity. Also please remember the noise factor, midnight is not the time to start doing donuts or racing through residential areas. The best thing would be to use these fun and exciting modes of transportation where they are designed to be used and that is OFF ROAD
Take Care and have a safe 2012 Starrider
We live in yahoo country …..
1. Snowmobiles in BC must be registered
2. If driven on a highway (a street is a “highway”) it requires license plates and insurance.
3. A police issued operating permit is required if operated
a) at uncontrolled highway crossings
b) on a highway (includes streets) or right-of-way, and
c) for non-perpendicular (non-direct) highway crossings.

Being a yahoo kills …..
“Being a yahoo kills ….. “
I couldn’t agree more!
Never, ever ride on the back of a yahoo’s machine.
evolution??
Gus…have you never done anything fun that is stupid….
Isn’t yahoo a search engine?
Not everything fun is stupid and usually stupid isn’t fun ;(
There is stupid ….. and then there is STUPID ….. :-)
In my world “stupid” is when it is risky only to you.
“STUPID”, on the other hand, is when that risk includes risking others without them knowing and agreeing to that risk.
Yahoo … a search engine???? … pretty risky one ….. the risk is you will not find anything important …. :-)
I once rode on the back of a yahoo machine when I was like 12. Its not recommended and I’d never ride on the back of a machine driven by anyone else ever again.
For those of us, including me, who forgot or did not know the origin of the word yahoo ….
A Yahoo is a legendary being in the novel Gulliver’s Travels (1726) by Jonathan Swift.
Swift describes the Yahoos as vile and savage creatures, filthy and with unpleasant habits, resembling human beings far too closely for the liking of protagonist Lemuel Gulliver, who finds the calm and rational society of intelligent horses, the Houyhnhnms, far preferable. The Yahoos are primitive creatures obsessed with “pretty stones” they find by digging in mud, thus representing the distasteful materialism and ignorant elitism Swift encountered in Britain.
Hence the term “yahoo” has come to mean “a crude, brutish or obscenely coarse person.
:-)
love the “Can’t fix stupid!”
The bottom line is that they were on a snowmobile ON A STREET and hit a parked vehicle!! Highly illegal!!
Licensed?? I doubt it! Sad – but yup, you can’t fix stupid.
I knew there was a reason I don’t use “Yahoo” as a search engine :-)
Dragonmaster if you think and believe that Speed doesn’t kill then you are sadly… SADLY mistaken!
Good luck with that!
newtechie, if you think and believe that speed does kill, then you are sadly…SADLY mistaken!
Good luck with that!
Speed doesn’t kill. It’s the instantaneous deceleration that’s the problem.
As soon as one steps into a car, one should get into a different mindset. A car is a wonderful tool, but it can also be very dangerous not only to yourself, but the hundreds of other people one encounters along a typical drive who can affect your well being due to something they do or the reverse.
One starts off with the concept of situational awareness, that is, take into consideration your state of mind, your abilities, the conditions of the vehicle, the road and weather conditions and, most of all the fact of âreadingâ all that information into your brain as time passes.
It does not matter what people think kills. The fact is all of the human and physical factors put together kill â frost on the road, darkness, poorly engineered roads, poorly maintained roads, excessive speed, faulty cars, needing to get home quickly, tuning in a radio station, drowsiness.
Hitting the ditch can happen at any posted highway speed. The consequence of hitting the ditch, depending on what the nature of the ditch is and the cliff which may be right there within 10 to 20 feet of the ditch (which it is in many locations on that stretch of highway as one near the tunnels) will not be much different at 80/100/120 km/hr ⦠give or take one or two more flips â¦.
The real question is, why did the vehicle hit the ditch? That was the consequence of several factors. To say otherwise is to not understand the dynamics of driving.
I would love to see the investigation report on this crash. As drivers we should view more of those than these spur of the moment pat answers. They teach very little.
Good post Gus… under the wrong story headline, but none the less. My guess is he could very well have been doing highway speed and hit black ice as they did have a snow bomb in the area that night… I’ve slide on loose rock from a landslide in the area last winter in my pickup truck… little pebbles that slide down onto the road, some of which were hitting the side of the truck as I drove past. They run the snow plows on that stretch of highway to remove the pebbles from the road rather than the snow… so its highly possible.
Who the hell parked their car so that it caused the impact with the snowmobile?!! That is the problem the RCMP should be investigating because if those yahoo’s ran into a house (which is a non-movable object)then they should be charged with stupid. But- they ran into a movable object so it must be the fault of the owner of the car……….. right? Can’t be stupid’s fault!!
