Prince George, B.C. – Good news for those watching the water level and ice build-up on the Nechako River this weekend.
Cottonwood Island Park and parts of the Heritage River Trails from the Cameron Street Bridge to Fort George Park were closed by the city Friday after the river rose by nearly two metres in a 24-hour period. An ice jam started to form Thursday and backed up to the John Hart Bridge, but the Environment Ministry’s Senior Flood Hazard Officer, Lyle Larson, stated he considered the risk of flooding low to moderate.
Chris Bone with the City of Prince George told Opinion 250 late Saturday that “things remain stable, there has been no change since Friday. She says the river is being monitored throughout the weekend by city staff and if there is a change in river levels residents will be notified.
Cottonwood Park and the Trails remain closed until you’re advised otherwise.
