Burns Lake Blast Having Ripple Effect in Region

Prince George, B.C. – The Central Interior Logging Association is hoping to be of assistance to some of the forestry workers who have been impacted by Friday’s tragic explosion and fire at the Burns Lake sawmill.

“The focus right now of course must be on the injured and deceased workers” says MaryAnne Arcand of CILA, “but this tragedy is having a ripple effect on the whole region.”

While the mill employed some 250 people, it is estimated that for every one direct job in a forestry mill, there are another 6 jobs in the bush.

In addition to the mill employees who are now off the job, there are loggers and truckers  who were supplying the mill with raw resources “We are hoping to link up some of our truckers with other contractors who are short of drivers” says Arcand.

While the owners of the mill, Hampton Affiliates out of Portland Oregon have been on scene, the CEO, Steve Zika , has not been able to say if the mill will be rebuilt.
