Prince George Offers Condolences and Support to Burns Lake

Monday, January 23, 2012 @ 6:38 PM
Prince George, B.C.- Mayor Shari Green has offered condolences to the community of Burns Lake in the wake of Friday’s fatal explosion and blast.

Mayor Green made the comments as she opened the regular meeting of Prince George City Council this evening.
Mayor Green said Prince George is prepared to offer whatever assistance it can to Burns Lake and offered thanks and praise to the first responders for their efforts to deal with the  inferno and the injured.

Councillor Frank Everitt, who is also the President of the Union (United Steelworkers Local 1-424) which represents the workers at the Babine Forest Products mill, says he has been overwhelmed by the response from people in the community, the region, the Province and the nation. “I have had people offer to open their homes to the families of the injured, there are workers who have offered to have their deductions directed to the Burns Lake fund and companies willing to match those donations.” Everitt  says it is much too early to say what the future may hold for that mill.

Earlier this evening, about an hour before a public meeting was set to start in Burns Lake, the Coroners’ Service confirmed a second set of remains had been located in the sawmill debris.
