Prince George, B.C. – The past two weeks have been filled with unimaginable tragedies across north-central B.C., tragedies that have claimed six lives and affected so many more people in several  communities.

The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed Friday that the two victims in a Tuesday’s house fire in Mackenzie were twins who would have turned two years old next month. Autopsies confirmed that the cause of the deaths of Joseph and Gabrielle Fleury was consistent with preliminary findings that they were killed in a fire. The parents of the toddlers and another child managed to get out of the house but the fire was too aggressive for anyone to rescue the twins from their second-floor bedroom. The entire community in Mackenzie is trying to cope with the tragic loss.

The same sentiment is being felt in Burns Lake and surrounding communities in the wake of the January 20^th explosion and fire that killed two sawmill workers at Babine Forest Products and literally terminated the jobs of 250 direct and many more indirect employees. A private funeral service for 45-year-old Robert Luggi was held Friday in Fraser Lake. 42-year-old Carl Charlie will be laid to rest following a service in Burns Lake today. 19 workers were injured in the firestorm, some of whom remain in critical condition.

A 32-year-old Fraser Lake man died Thursday night when his car went  into the oncoming lane and hit a pickup on the Stellaquo Overpass on Highway 16 west, just outside Fraser Lake. Evidence at the scene indicated alcohol was a contributing factor. The lone occupant of the truck was not hurt.

And North District Major Crime is investigating a suspicious death on the Nak’azdli reserve at Fort St. James.  Human remains were found Thursday in a vacant home on Lower Road. Those remains have now been identified as those of 28-year-old Fribjon Bjornson, who was reported missing from Vanderhoof on January 21st. Police don’t know why he died or the cause of his death, but say evidence found at the scene indicates his death is suspicious.

Also this week, on Wednesday night, a 47-year-old Edmonton man, his 37-year-old wife, 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter were killed just outside Barriere when their S-U-V flipped on its side and slid into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer. The family was on its way to California, where the man was to begin a new job.
