No New Housing Starts In PG In January
Prince George, BC – According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, Prince George is the only urban centre in the province not to see an increase in new home construction last month, compared to January of 2011.
In fact, Prince George was the only city with no activity across the board – there no new housing starts in January of last year, nor any started last month. The same holds true for new starts on multiple-family dwellings – zero and zero.
CMHC is reporting an increase in new home construction in Vancouver of 119 – 1,555 last month, compared to 1,436 a year ago – and says the upswing has been mirrored in other BC cities.
"Both single-detached and multiple-family housing starts were above year-ago levels," says the CMHC’s Regional Economist, Carol Frketich. Multiple-family starts made up the majority of new starts in urban areas and Frketich says most were in Vancouver, Burnaby, Nanaimo, Coquitlam and Surrey.
