City Takes Centre Stage At Gathering Of Consuls General
Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Mayor, Shari Green, and the Acting CEO of Initiatives Prince George, Heather Oland, feel they’ve been successful in raising the city’s profile and awareness of its strategic importance to a roomful of international dignataries in Vancouver today.
As a follow up to the US Consul General, Anne Callaghan’s, visit to Prince George last fall, Callaghan helped to arrange today’s luncheon to give the City officials the opportunity to speak directly to a group of approximately 25 Consuls General.
Oland says the goal was to give a ‘high level’ overview of the city, itself, as well as highlight its strategic location as a service centre and transportation hub at the outset of what’s being dubbed the ‘Northern Decade’.
"This is a group of people, based in Vancouver, that have strong connections around the globe," says Mayor Shari Green. "And they were very impressed with our presentation today. We had a strong question/answer session afterwards and I’m quite certain that we’ll even see a few of them come to visit us – just to see for themselves and have an opportunity to explore more of the province than where they’re based."
The Acting CEO of IPG says connections have been made. She says there were several questions regarding the provincial nominee program that helps find and attract international workers to the province. Oland says one of the officials representing his country, also works through a private business in conjunction with the province to bring newcomers to BC. "So he’s hoping to explore opportunities for businesses in Prince George that are looking for workers and to take advantage of that program."
Oland says there were also questions regarding international student opportunities and a couple of business suggestions. "So there’s seven or eight phone calls and connections that we’re going to further explore as a result of today’s connection."
