Roads Wet At Time Of Fatal Crash
Prince George, BC – RCMP officers investigating yesterday’s head-on collision that killed five people just north of McLeese lake, now say the roadway was wet at the time of the fiery crash.
Corporal Madonna Saunderson says initial reports to police had been that the highway was bare and dry. Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or who may have information they feel may assist in the investigation, and those who travelled through the area prior to the crash to contact the Williams Lake Detachment 250-392-6211 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
Corporal Saunderson says the BC Coroner’s Service has called in a specialist from its Identification and Disaster Response Unit, who will arrive in Williams Lake today to assist with forensic identification.
The crash killed a family of four from Prince George – Matt Atlizer, his wife, Leah, and their two children, Jonathan and Emily, as well as a relative.

The road at that exact spot were more than wet, it was frosty and slippery in patches. I drove through that exact spot only a while before and my rear end was wiggling out even at low speeds in the shady areas.
It scared the hell out of me and I was going really slow. I can see how someone would get their guard down as the roads looked pristine in most areas but they were far from it in some.
Tragic..truly tragic.
realitycheck, call the number above and report what you know.
I for one have driven through this particular curve so many times over the past 30 years I’ve lost count.
When entering this curve travelling southbound in the curb lane, there is an absolute sense that you are going to cross the center lines. When you’re in the passing lane it’s an even worse sensation.
From what I recall the slope of the road is not what it should be, or perhaps it’s just an optical illusion. Either way the
feeling you are about to drive straight off the road in this curve is definately there.
If there was ice at the time I can see it as a definate contributing factor.
I’m sure there are others that can back up what I say.
Condolences to all.
Driven this road many times over the years. The curves in question does create a sense of getting lax being a wider section. Hasn’t there ben other accidents in the same general area?
The roads were slippery in shaded areas on this day as I drive that highway same morning I would be very surprised to learn that it wasn’t
due to black ice. I was driving a SUV with brand new winter tires and still slid around some of those corners but there were no highways personal on the roads sanding or salting these high risk areas. Very tragic and god bless those that passed away and their family and friends.

Yes Karo, it costs the Hwy’s maintenance contractors money to patrol our Hwys esuring any dangerous icy areas are sanded for those that pay the bills.
Whats worse is, our gov’t lets them not do their job!

This was very tragic….I passed through this section of hwy at 7:30 that morning, just 2 hrs before this accident occurred and yes, due to the dynamics of this S curve (being it is a northfacing slope and the high landscape rises on either side prevent any exposure to the sun, I also agree there is a slight grade to the outside of the curves)this tends to be a very slippery section due to perma frost, however; to come to the road services defense, I followed a sand truck through there that morning, again, only 2 hrs before the accident, and he was being exceptionally generous with the sand. There is clear signage that directs traffic to keep right unless passing, I found it strange the SUV was travelling in the center lane, unless passing another vehicle, which would indicate a higher rate of speed…..Sadly, unless the aforementioned witness can provide more details, we may never know why the SUV crossed the center line. I feel terrible for the family and friends….condolences.
