Failing To Stop At A Red Causes Collision With Police Cruiser

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 @ 9:38 AM

Prince George, BC – Local RCMP are just releasing information now about a collision involving a police cruiser that occurred in College Heights just before the noon hour yesterday.

Media Relations Officer, Corporal Craig Douglass, says the crash occurred at the intersection of Domano Boulevard and O’Grady Road.  He says police supervisors immediately attended the scene and conducted an investigation that included interviewing a number of witnesses who stopped to assist both drivers.

Corporal Douglass says the police cruiser was heading westbound on Domano towards Highway 16 and was approaching a green light at O’Grady, when a pick-up truck traveling north on O’Grady failed to stop at the red light.

Douglass says the RCMP officer attempted to avoid the collision by braking and swerving to the right – actions, he says, that likely reduced the impact of the crash, but the cruiser did strike the passenger side of the truck.  The truck received minimal damage, while the cruiser suffered moderate front end damage.

The 69-year-old Prince George man driving the pick-up was given a ticket for failing to stop for a red light.  Neither driver was injured in the collision.

Cue obligatory cell phone comments….

Not gonna comment on cell phones on this one , but rather to reinforce the need for mandatory testing for aging drivers. On a side note , if this keeps up will Prince George have any cruisers left, this is at least 3 this month in accidents.

“Local RCMP are just releasing information now about a collision involving a police cruiser that occurred in College Heights just before the noon hour yesterday.”

I drove by a collision which happened yesterday afternoon on Tabor and First. That was not reported here.

Do all collisions have to be reported to the media? Or is it because a police cruiser was involved?

SO Harleyguy, at what age is someone ‘aging’ to the point where they should be subject to mandatory testing?
Point being that to a person of say 20 years, an ‘old’ person may be 50, while to another, say 50 years old, 70 is old.
Who decides?
I do agree with your opinion on (more frequent) mandatory testing, but worry that this could become prohibitively expensive for some folks.
metalman.

Yes sir, let’s get after those “aging drivers” out there. Let’s make a driving test mandatory evry three months at a small cost of 150-200 dollars per test. It could then be officially classed as another hiden tax grab which I’m sure all retirees on a fixed income would be more than glad to pay.

Aging drivers? I think it depends on how much the person drives. You have to keep doing something to keep sharp at it. People who drive very little very well may be a bit rusty, young ones too.

Whoops

HarleyGuy72 Must ask is the 72 your age or your machines?
At age 25 the human male body starts to degrade, there is your starting point for retesting, maybe everyone over 25 should retest each 6 months, starting with you. When are you going to make your appointment,or, is it possible you do not drive.

When you turn 80, ICBC requires that you get a medical completed by a doctor. If there are any concerns or any red flags, you have to re-test in order to continue to be allowed to drive. :)

Just some random thoughts… Most people already believe that they are better drivers than “average”. Would this increase further if they could pass something as simple as the current road test? Would borderline drivers feel vindicated and drive with more confidence than they have skills for?
Conversely, if someone fails then what? Take their license… So how many would continue to drive? There are already a lot of unlicensed drivers on the road, would this increase? Undoubtedly.
Many drivers (myself included) have some bad habits. Speed a little, maybe not fully stop at a lonely stop sign, not signal occasionally etc etc. Everyone knows these are wrong though, so to “straighten up” long enough to pass the test would not help at all. Tomorrow it would be same old same old.
Assuming you can see and hear and have a sound mind what else can be done – test for reaction time sounds ok but good luck setting that benchmark. What happens when they find out a 30 year old with four beers in him is faster than a sober 80 year old.
Again, just random thoughts for conversation

Ageing Driver at 69?? Why is it that ICBC lowers your Rates at Age 65, I tell you why less Collisions my Friend!

interceptor, gotta ask, where did you get such a stat,”What happens when they find out a 30 year old with four beers in him is faster than a sober 80 year old.”

I was wondering about that too.

I think he meant to write “What happens when they find out a 80 year old with four beers in him is faster than a sober 30 year old.”

The legal driving age would have to move from 16 to 31 …. ;-)

Lol – perhaps change “when” to “if”… ;-)

Outwest – ICBC only lowers your rates at 65 if you are retired and no longer driving to and from work. So of course, with less driving, there are fewer collisions.

Sat with a group of over 65’ers the other day, and they all thought that it was a good thing to restrict juveniles and not allow a full drivers license at age 16.

When I pointed out that everyone at the table got their license at age 16 and at the time seemed to think that it was a good idea, the only defence they had was **times have changed**

It now seems that the next big change in drivers license’s will be mandatory testing at age 65 or 70. This of course will be because **times have changed**

What goes around comes around. The fact of the matter is the roads are full of incompenent drivers from the age of 16 to 86 every day of the week. You have a different set of statistics for every age group.

The one group who seems to constantly slide under the radar is the most dangerous group, who would be best discribed as **stupid drivers**. Perhaps we should have an IQ test along with a road test, along with a drug and urine test, and a brain scan.

At the end of the day, there will be a certain percentage of people killed by accidents every year. The statistics may vary from time to time, but the killings go on. This will not change, unless you ban cars.

I would suggest that the 30 year old with four beers in him would probably be faster than a sober 30-40-50-60 or yr old as well, especially if he spiked the beer down in a few minutes and on a empty stomach, along with an oxycontin or two.
which is common with 30 yr old guys, 80 yr guys I would say no their not into that crap.

I`m already pimpin out my scoot(dont need a license to drive one of those around town)for when I`m retired and have surrendered my license…and I can smoke dope and drive…
