It’s Seedy Saturday
Prince George, BC – ‘Plant’ yourself in the atrium at The Exploration Place today to take part in Seedy Saturday…
Master Gardeners from the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society will be on-hand to offer up their expertise from 9:30am until 3pm. In addition, there will be family activities, displays, seed trading, seed buying, and lots of ‘seedy’ talk.
Presentations include:
10:15 am. Planning, planting, storing, tracking your own seed to grow your food.
11:15 am. Learn about pruning basics and using snips from your trees and plants to propagate more trees and plants.
12:15 pm. Grab your lunch and join others for this "no host" seed gathering; a time to chat and connect with other seed lovers. Bring catalogues, share seed orders, trade seeds, bring your seeds to clean.
1:15 pm. Learn about methods used at a local certified organic farm including soil preparation, composting, crop rotation, cover cropping, mulching and disease and pest prevention
2:15 pm. Learn about xeriscaping, the principles of xeriscaping, plants, mulching, and more.
Admission to the atrium and presentations are free.
Seedy Saturday events take place across the country, as a way to bring communities together to share seeds, especially heirloom seeds, and talk about importance of conserving heritage garden and field crops. The first such event was organized in Vancouver by a BC director of the Heritage Seed Program (now Seeds of Diversity) back in 1989.
