City Crews Cleaning Up After Yesterday’s Snowfall

Prince George, BC – Yesterday’s dump of snow once again pushed thoughts of spring around the corner…
City employees and contractors were out as soon as the snow stopped falling last night to get to work on clearing major bus routes, arterials and problem hills.
The City’s Supervisor of Technical Services, Mick Jones, says those efforts continue today and crews will move into the downtown core this evening. He says the focus will shift to the number one and two priority roads tomorrow and crews will begin to move into the residential areas.
Jones says it’s still too early in the year to determine how 2012’s snow removal requirements compare to previous years.
He says a major snow event costs in the $300-thousand dollar range to clear, but that depends on timing – with weekend snowfalls typically involving overtime expenses.
The City supervisor says the recent warm weather had been leading to thoughts winter might be over, but yesterday proved that isn’t the case. Jones says, so far, though the season hasn’t been too bad with a fair, rather than extreme, amount of snow.

Lets see. This is the 4th snowfall we have had before our garbage pickup day, which is mondays, and we have yet to see our roads plowed before the garbage is picked up. we have yet to see our roads plowed from the last snowfall in fact. This is one of the priorities that was set out by the superintendant of snow removal at the beginning of the season. Doesn’t happen. They lie and say anything to try to act like they know what they are doing.

Crews were out downtown yesterday which is interesting since it was a Saturday. Today, on a Sunday, they cleared our residential streets, but it is garbage pickup tomorrow for us, so that could be the reason.
$300,000 clear snow in the whole city after a snowfall such as Friday’s. $210,000 to pave a one metre wide strip with thin asphalt 280 metres long on a few cm of base material.
Does not seem reasonable.
Well Gus, I am in the garbage zone for tomorrow as well and I havent even heard a snowplow or grader anywhere in my neighbourhood. And this has been the norm for the whole winter. The last time we saw a grader or snow truck here was when we had hardpacked streets and they were scraping them down as much as they could. When it snows, no one shows.
Maybe we gotta hire Mexicans to plow our roads..they`ll probably get the job done with out any doughnut breaks or whining to a union rep..
