Sprouting Connections Prior To The Spring Growing Season
All things seedy were up for discussion in the atrium at The Exploration Place yesterday
Prince George, BC – With more than 20-centimetres of new snow on the ground, it was the perfect opportunity for master and novice gardeners, alike, to gather indoors to swap stories, seeds, advice and more at The Exploration Place…
As part of Heritage Week, the museum hosted the 13th annual local Seedy Saturday. Organizer, Jovanka Djordjevich, with Community Gardens Prince George, says the event is about bringing people together at the very beginning of the growing season when they’re just planning their gardens.
"This is the best time to do the education and get people thinking about organic techniques and seed saving and all the different things that are involved with gardening," says Djordjevich.
In addition to Community Gardens, there were information booths set up by local groups including the David Douglass Botanical Garden Society, the Prince George Community Seed Collective, Enhance PG, the Northwest Invasive Plant Council, and a number of presentations on everything from organic gardening to xeriscaping (gardening and landscaping techniques that reduce the need for supplemental watering). The atrium was packed at various points throughout the day-long event.
With so much interest in growing local and food security, Djordjevich, says the event is an opportunity, "To turn people on to open-pollinated seeds, heritage seeds, seeds that we can actually grow and save ourselves, so that we have a little more control over what we’re growing and a little more sustainability."

What a great event, I wish it could be held twice a year. So much to learn, so many opportunities to profit from the experience of those who are experienced in growing vegetables organically, and saving seeds, and perpetuating heritage varieties.
I was encouraged by the number of young families who attended, this is great, they are the future in our battle against the Industrial Agriculture Complex.
