Family Y’s Childcare Services Ramps Up In Light Of Teachers’ Strike
Prince George, BC – The Director of Childcare Services at the Prince George Family Y is rolling out plans to accomodate the children and families already registered in after-school care programs with full day care for Monday’s teachers’ strike.
Lynette Mikalishen says, "I’ve actually been working for a few weeks now on a plan – knowing that job action may happen and that we would have to have full daycare at some location, and a lot of daycare."
Mikalishen says the Y has an agreement in place to use the Westwood Mennonite Church on Ospika Boulevard for the three days of job action planned for next week. She says a temporary daycare license is in the process of being applied for and staff is stepping up to work the extra hours. The after-school programs at the Y have between 160-170 children registered.
"On Tuesday, we sent a letter home to parents to see if they would require full day daycare, so that we could start to organize and we’ve been working with those results," she says.
Mikalishen adds that other parents had started phoning the Y’s Childcare Registrar when news of the strike broke yesterday to inquire about available spaces and a wait list has been started – she’s hoping some extra spaces may be available for the public, as well.

Day care is not a problem. The schools will remain open and your child will be safe there. They will be supervised by the administrative team. However, keep in mind, that usually there is a 30 to 1 ratio of student to teacher and with the limited number of admin in your school this number could go up. Are you comfortable with that? Is your child comfortable with that?
Drop them all off at PGSS for the rally.
