Burns Lake, B.C. – For the second time in as many months, a mill in the Burns Lake region has experienced fire.
This morning, around 7:22, the Burns Lake Fire Department and the RCMP were called out to a structure fire at the Decker Lake Forest Products Mill. This mill is owned by Hampton Affiliates, the same company which owns the Babine Forest Products mill which was destroyed in a blast and fire in January.
Fire and Rescue along with BC Ambulance, BC Hydro and Pacific Northern Gas attended the scene of the fire, which reportedly started in a portion of the planer mill. There were approximately 50 employees on site at the time of the fire who all assisted with trying to put out the fire before emergency crews arrived.
The fire was contained and successfully extinguished by mill employees and emergency crews.
"The fire was contained by the mill employees and due to their quick response and training they were able to prevent the fire from spreading and causing further damage to the mill "stated S/Sgt. Grant MacDonald, Commander of the Burns Lake Detachment.
At least one employee was treated at the scene by paramedics for smoke inhalation.
No further injuries have been reported and the fire was not deemed suspicious in nature.
The community of Burns Lake is still trying to recover from the devastating blaze in January which destroyed the Hampton Affiliates Babine Forest Products sawmill, the single largest employer in the community. One employee remains in hospital recovering from injuries suffered in the blast and fire. Two employees died in that tragic blaze.

Congrats to all those mill employees, it shows determination not to have another tragedy. Well done.
There seems to be an oddly bunch of mill fires of late. Insurance Companies of these companies should be hiring a few more private investigators as it seems to be becoming the norm. Must be big money if one of these mills burns to the ground?
How many burning mills in the last 10 yrs??
Yes, Congrats to the employee’s that saved their place of work!
