Relocating Tennis Courts …Ball Now in Council’s Court

Monday, March 12, 2012 @ 3:59 AM
Prince George, B.C- The possible movement of the tennis courts from Recreation Place to a site  northwest of the PGGCC is up for discussion at Prince George City Council this evening.

The plan calls for at least $1.6 million garnered from the sale of the property (which is the current home of the tennis courts) used to rebuild the courts on a site to the northwest of the PGGCC clubhouse. That relocation cost is expected to be in the range of $815 thousand and a further $800 grand to upgrade the PGGCC.

The change would provide for the PGGCC continuing to own the building, but the City would have an option to buy the building and an adjacent parking lot for a buck, should the PGGCC no longer provide golf services at that site. This way, the City is assured of having a site for curling events for the Canada Winter Games  in 2015.

The agreement would see the PGGCC building become a “community recreation facility”.

When the City was developing the Golf Course neighbourhood plan, site users ( such as the softball diamonds and the tennis club) were promised the City would provide facilities equal to or better than their existing sites. The ball diamonds on the North Nechako Road were created to replace the ball diamonds on Recreation Place.

The ball diamonds on the North Nechako Road …. I do not drive by there that often. It seems to me that they are not used all that much.

WOuld love to hear from someone who has a better idea than I have of how frequently they are used.

Firstly it was just a few years ago the City relocated the Tennis Club from 15th Avenue (Around Foothills) to its present location, and in addition they built the new facilities at the Tennis Club. They are now going to move them. So we have some questions.

Why are we moving.? Who benefits.? Who asked for this move?

Im sure that the Tennis Club was happy where they were located. So one would assume that the moving and the sale of the property has something to do with the Golf Course being **border line bankrupt**. What happens to the building on the present Tennis Court. Knowing the City they will just demolish it.

**The change would allow the PGGCC to continue to own the building** So it would appear that we (taxpayers) will pay for the $800,000.00 upgrade to the building.

What happens to the land North of the Tennis Club that is outlined in **red** This land I beleive is owned by the Golf Club. Is it going to be sold, and if so what is that money going to be used for. Seems to me that selling this property will have a negative effect on the driving range.

As the sale of these properties gets closer and closer the the Playhouse Theatre, it wont be long before the City will start the propaganda campaign to tear down the Playhouse, and make way for some more commercial business. Then later they will state that we dont have any facilities for Theatre, and will push us to pay for a new PAC.

Seems we cant win for losing.

I am sure the council will continue with their winning ways and do what ever costs the most with least results.

I must say, this is one of the most confusing articles I’ve ever read on Opinion 250:

– Who owns the land being sold, the city or the PGGCC?
– Of the 1.6M in proceeds, I get that 800K will be used to build new tennis courts, but what about the other 800K? It says to “upgrade” the PGGCC, but what upgrades would those be?
– It then talks about the PGGCC continuing to own a building, but what building are they talking about? The one currently at the site of the tennis courts, one that will be built at the proposed new site, or something completely different?
– What the heck is going to be done with the land being sold? Looks like a large parcel is being assembled for some sort of reason . . .

Without knowing all of those details, I’m not even sure I can comment on what I think of the proposed plan.

Who will the buyer be, Commonwealth? What will be built in this location?

Someone already knows the answers and they need to inform the taxpayers. Or will we hear about it after the deal is inked behind closed doors?

Dragonmaster, you hit the nail on the head.

These lands have a purpose in mind already, why else would you move brand new tennis courts and demo the building? There are probably initial blueprints already in the planning department and mayor’s office.

With the New Sandman Suites right there and a Casino across the street one can only assume another hotel (perhaps) by the size of the red square and red “L” together
