BCSPCA Calls for Bill 24 to Be Withdrawn

Prince George, B.C.- The head of the BCSPCA is calling on the Provincial Government to withdraw Bill 24.
This Bill, would make a change to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act that Craig Daniell says would give the BC Farm Industry Review Board (BC FIRB) jurisdiction to review decisions by the BC SPCA to seize animals that are in distress.
Daniell says the change could have a serious impact not only in the length of time seizure decision appeals are heard, but on the animals and the shelters which must look after the animals until a final decision is made.
Currently, appeals by those whose animals have been seized, are made through the B.C. Supreme Court. Daniell says that process takes, on average, 75 days. According to Daniell, the BC FIRB decisions can take at least 6 months to be delivered. “This means that our shelters may be filled with seized animals awaiting rulings for prolonged periods of time. Not only is this costly, it is also extremely poor welfare to keep animals in shelters when they could be adopted into loving homes. Having our shelters filled with seized animals awaiting rulings will also mean that we will not have the space to accommodate other abandoned, stray, surrendered and injured animals who desperately need our care.”
Daniell has circulated an email asking supporters to contact their MLA and ask the MLA to support withdrawing Bill 24.
