CUPE Boss Questions Mayor Green’s Restraint

Prince George, B.C. – The President of CUPE Local 1048, representing inside workers at the City of Prince George, is astounded that Mayor Shari Green will have her own personal Executive Assistant come the beginning of April.
Mayor Green confirmed Thursday that Beverly Smith will be providing services to her (the mayor) and will be “available” to the City Manager. Green says if she could do the job with less she would, “but it can’t be done.” The announcement of the hiring follows the elimination in January of 28 positions at the city in order to save about 2-million-dollars per year.
CUPE President Janet Bigelow says previously the mayor did not have a personal Executive Assistant. There was a person in place to serve the mayor, council and administration. Bigelow says there is someone in that position right now, lining up appointments and tending to other duties, and wonders what is to happen to that person. Bigelow says “I thought we were supposed to be saving money. In this time of restraint why does she (Green) need a personal assistant when the mayors of this city have never had one in the past?”
Green says the new job wasn’t posted because it’s an exempt position and posting it publicly is not required. She also would not divulge the salary to be paid Ms. Smith, saying it is below the $75,000 level at which public disclosure is required.

Huh? We may not know how much this person is going to make but we should be entitled to know the hours this person is going to work. If this is an extra position for assisting the mayor etc., then it will be less work for the mayor. Right? If this is the case then claw back your wage Green.
The City is suppost to be a public body..All wages/contracts should be disclosed over $20,000 not $75,000. (I’m dreaming folks) I am sure city hires more than a few people more than once a year……….
Unbelievable.. I did not vote for Green…I
would like to kick ass for those that did. :P
wow….
Hey, Talk about( a sow at the trough )?
High Maintenance. Wonder what Green’s expenses are at.
Yikes… taken right from the playbook of Christy Clark, hiring her buddy Pamela Martin…. and to this day, nobody is really sure what she does.
Bonnie Bailey has been the Executive Assistant for the past two Mayors why is she not good enough for the current Mayor?
I guess Green and Oland have someone to carry their shopping bags on their girl trips to Vancouver to drum up business for the city or Ms. Smith could be out filling pot-holes! I hope everyone who voted for Green in November are happy now! IDIOTS! Every last one of you!
Shari needs an assistant to help shovel tax dollars into the downtown, don’t want her off with a sore back.Commonwealth did not get the 30 year tax holiday so they REALLY need it.
BTW I’m sure cupe would have been fine with the new employee if she was kicking in monthly dues.
At least she could have made the pretense of making it look legit by opening up the position to the public. If ALL she wanted was an assistant, then why was it not put out to the public so others could apply for it? Why the big secret as to the amount of pay? How much would an assistant doing a comparable job in the private sector be making? I think this is just another overpaid civil servant job at our expense and a great big thank you to someone who was licking her boots during the election. At least make the patronage a little more subtle, green. How much damage will she be able to do to the little bit of integrity politics in this town has left in her 4 years?
How the politicians change after they are elected! It makes a mockery of democracy. What are the taxpayers to do to stop such actions as this?
Green admitted to using City funds to go to Victoria to promote tax breaks for Commonwealth. How much time does this executive assistant spend dealing with and supporting what Commonwealth wants?
Two executive assistants competing for the same work. One will get the message and leave eventually or get shuffled off to somewhere else.
What a hypocritical decision. Obviously she doesn’t comprehend a “layoff”.
“What are the taxpayers to do to stop such actions as this?”
Skakun got hit with a breach of confidence because he leaked information. He was “shown” the oath of office he took.
We should require all those running for office to swear an oath to a judge when nominations close that they will abide by the rules and include in that, that anything they “promise” and the platfrom they run on will be done to the best of their ability.
If they win, those same words which reiterate their personal platforms will have to be sworn to once more.
If they breach that oath, they will be impeached.
With the situation as it appears to be degrading inot in PG, something has to be done. The province needs to make some tougher requirements. Once again, we appear to be number 1.
This is starting to become serious, in my opinion.
If they opened that job to the public, no one in their right mind would apply for it.
If she wants a personal assistant, it should come out of her expense funds then and she should have to cut corners elsewhere.
“Bigelow says âI thought we were supposed to be saving money. In this time of restraint why does she (Green) need a personal assistant when the mayors of this city have never had one in the past?â”
Yes, I believe that saving money was indeed a priority for the city heading into this year. As to the second part of the question, the answer is “because”. Asking for further clarification would just be rude and childish.
These people were elected by us with the mandate to run a city, with the dedicated work of other people who were hired by them to do a proper job, all paid for with the taxes we pay. Without us living here, working here and paying taxes here the whole shebang shuts down and ALL of them would be looking for jobs!
Get real, people! Forget the political shenanigans and posturing (which are just another needless detraction) and start running the city!!!
The last thing we need is political stratification, feuding and grandstanding!
Fix the roads, the potholes, the other infrastructure, provide services efficiently and with some respect for the ability of the taxpayers to pay for it!
Get cracking and do the work you are getting paid for!
Who is Beverly Smith? If the job was not posted, then how did she get it? What are her qualifications and past work experience?
Will Sherry Green need a car and driver next? It better be a Cadillac Escalade with lots of suspension. We wouldn’t want her to have a rough ride on P.G.’s streets now would we!
To all the gullible folks that drank Shari’s kool-aid and voted for her……
Middle Finger is broke and desperate.
Please send money.
So Shari is really scary…yes that’s right, Scary Shari…Yikes!! She was serving lemon aid during her campaign, could have been something in that…let’s see…lemon aid, lemons, oh I get it….”when I win, you can suck lemons” Okay I get it!! How dumb could I have been?
how many signatures to get rid of scary shari.
