Prince George, B.C.- The Provincial Government is pumping about $500 thousand dollars into the   RCMP program to track down , dismantle and prosecute those involved in marijuana grow ops.

The previous program (CRIME) Cariboo Region Integrated Marijuana Enforcement,  has come to an end, after having searched 70 properties, seized 119,606 plants and laying charges against 78 people.

All those plants stacked up on the scales to a whopping 11 tons. “From a policing perspective, the results that we have seen from the CRIME project were very substantial”, says Superintendent Brian Cantera, Officer in Charge RCMP Federal Drug Enforcement Branch.  While the 10 month mandate for CRIME is now over, a new program will be picking up where CRIME left off.

The North District Integrated Marijuana Enforcement Team  (NDIME) will be stationed in Prince George, ( sharing accommodation with the CFSEU anti gang unit) and will focus on grow ops through 100 Mile House, Williams Lake, Quesnel and Prince George.  These grow ops are not mom and pop operations, they are established in rural areas by members of organized crime from the lower mainland. “We are clearly sending notice that organized crime groups are not welcome in North District” says North District Superintendent Rod Booth.

“We want to build on the success of the CRIME program and that is why we will be providing the resources to ensure that the momentum continues” says Minister of Justice and Attorney General Shirley Bond. “The North District Integrated Marijuana Enforcement (NDIME) Task Force will provide expertise and support to local detachments. We are covering operational costs for 4 municipal members, funding a member from the CFSEU, and providing the unit with additional support from Regional General Investigative Services, and the North District Criminal Intelligence Probe team.”

NDIME is comprised of members from Prince George, Quesnel, Williams Lake, 100 Mile House, two Federal RCMP Drug Enforcement Branch members, and one member from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit. The task force receives additional provincial support from Regional GIS and the ND Criminal Intelligence Probe Team and federal support from the Integrated Proceeds of Crime Section.

It would be interesting to know of the charges against 78 people, how many have actually made it to court and what was the sentence. For the money spent, is it worth it when the courts let the person off with a 6 month sentence. Given the effort to find, arrest and convict them at least make it a 5 – 10 year sentence

They should check out the little settlement of Bear Lake, There used to be 3 there, they are probably still growing and growing……L

We saw cost per vote on 250, maybe we could see cost per conviction? Or cost per day in jail?

I bet if we saw those figures we’d be shocked?

I think anyone can do one day in jail and eighteen months probation “standing on their head”. I recollect that was said in an old gangster movie from the thirties.
