Cariboo Cougars Looking to Be Giant Killers
by Jeff Sergeant
Burnaby, BC — For the third straight year, the Cariboo Cougars enter the BCMML Championship series up against the powerhouse Vancouver NW Giants who are looking for their fourth straight provincial title.
The Cougars are searching for their first banner since 2008 having lost the last two finals to the Giants.
The series pits the league’s most balanced and one of the most potent offences against the stingiest defence as the Giants allowed only 66 goals through 40 regular season games.
Once again the Cougars find themselves on the visitor’s bench at the Burnaby Winter Club, a building that hasn’t been kind to the Cats in the past. But Captain Tanner Fjellstrom knows if they stick to their gameplan, they have as good a chance as any to come away with a series win.
"We’ve just got to out hit them. They’re a physical team, and I think if we play with our physiciality that we know we’re capable of we can take it to them, just try to jump on them early," said Fjellstrom.
Head Coach Trevor Sprague is also looking for his first MML title and feels this is the best chance he’s had so far.
"The timing and the stars have to align, I think those stars are just about aligned for us for Friday and Saturday night, we should have a pretty good time in Vancouver on Saturday night hopefully and make sure that we come back with a title," said Sprague. "It’s going to be a physical series, we already know that, we know it’s going to be back and forth, we know that there’s going to be goals, but you know what, there’s going to be great goaltending, it’s going to be a great game."
Game one is set for 7:30pm tonight with puckdrop for game two at 7:45pm Saturday. Game three, if necessary, is set for 9:30am Sunday. All games can be viewed live both at www.cariboocougars.ca and www.bchockey.net.
