Prince George-Mackenzie MLA Pat Bell hands Mackenzie Mayor Stephanie Killam cheque for $605K
Mackenzie, B.C.- They may not have won the national contest, but the residents of Mackenzie have proven their community is Hockeyville.
The community made a great effort to win the national title last year, one that would have seen them host an NHL pre-season game, and get $100 thousand dollars for upgrades to their rink facilities.
Well, Mackenzie finished second. But this afternoon was proof that “second place” is not the “ first loser”.
In an event sponsored by Canfor, aimed at celebrating the community spirit in Mackanzie, a game between Vancouver Canucks Alumni and local players brought much more than the $100K dollar prize the community would have picked up had it the won the Kraft contest.
On behalf of the Province of B.C., the Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, Pat Bell, delivered a cheque for $605,220.00 just as the ‘Chicks with Sticks’ and former Canucks were about to face off.
“What makes this presentation so special,” says Bell, “ is that when this facility was first built in the early 70’s, there was no organized league for women to play hockey. Here we are today, with the Chicks with Sticks and part of this money will be used to build two dressing rooms for women.”
The grant will also be used to cover the cost of a new heat exchanger, and upgrade lighting in the arena.
All proceeds from the sale of tickets to this afternoon’s game will be donated to Mackenzie Counselling.

Good to see Canfor supporting the community, and Canucks Alumni travelling to what must be the end of the earth for them. Did anyone fall asleep while Mr. Hamburger Patty droned on and on?
metalman.
Nasty remark uncalled for.
I agree with Princegeorge Metalman.. that is a nasty comment. What ever your experience with Pat Bell.. He gave Mackenzie’s citizens hope thru out our hard times. The community spirit in this town is short of unbeliveable. I bet you can’t say that of your Town.
Mackenzie is okay, and of course there is a strong community spirit there.
It is for Mr. Bell that I have this mistrust.
metalman.
The only thing Pat can be accused of is being overly optimistic at times. Other than that he has done an admirable job for his constituents.
Vote buying.
I suppose! I think I would do this in PG if I was looking to buy votes, but I’m sure the people in Mackenzie appreciate it all the same.
This is all good for Macktown, but Pat makes it sound like the money is coming from his back pocket. For some reason these clowns forget that the taxpayers are paying for all his promises.
Let’s face it, politicians have and do, waste tax dollars on much….nice to see it go here into something positive. Congrats to McKenzie, the community can use and deserves the good news:)
