Cullen Did Very Well In NDP Race
Tuesday, March 27, 2012 @ 3:45 AM
Nathan Cullen does not need to feel ashamed in any way for his third place finish in the NDP leadership race.
When the third ballot was counted Cullen had 24.6% of the vote compared to Thomas Mulcair with 43.8% and Brian Topp with 31.6%.
Entering the race as a candidate from a constituency which can only be described as "coastal rural", Cullen has made himself a name in the NDP ranks across Canada.
He already enjoyed wide spread support not only from his constituents but also from the British Columbia population at large. Transmitting that image to the majority of Canadians would be, at best, a daunting task and Cullen’s charisma and intelligence showed well in the race and vote.
It would have been nice, very nice to have had the leader of Canada’s official opposition living next door.
We may have to wait for another day and make no mistake we will continue to hear allot about Nathan Cullen well into the future.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s’ opinion.

Well done Nathan, I feel as though it was a sure thing that you will be the next leader. But I will work with Mr. Mulclair and hopefully next term you will be the chosen leader. I wish you all of the best in the comming years.
Didn’t we actually have a couple of prime ministers who lived “next door” and that didn’t seem to make any difference in our political clout in Ottawa. It seems as soon as a local politico makes it to Ottawa they forget where they came from. A good example would be Preston Manning, talk about turning hollywood when he hit the big lights.
We need a politician that keeps fighting for equal representation for BC…in the parliament building and in the senate….it should be an issue every election!!
As in the USA, we need 2 Senators per province, plus one per territory ….. 23 Senators … they could meet at Starbucks on Wednesdays.
Cullen’s success will be a big bonus to this region for a long time to come IMO. Already a lot of people in the East are saying if the ballots weren’t fixed in their preference, and members could have changed their preference during the leadership convention, than Nathen Cullen would be the leader of the opposition today. As such he has positioned himself as a player of influence in Canadian politics and having influence helps in a lot of ways that can’t be measured. MP’s will be coming to Nathen for support on a host of issues, and as such he will have his back scratched in return on issues for Northern BC.
The catch-22 for Nathen Cullen was his opposition to Enbridge Gateway. By speaking up a lot of people seen him as an honest guy they could support… but by speaking up his leadership bid was undermined by the denial of service that elected Muclair who flip flopped on Gateway… IMHO. Oil gets what they want, and they aren’t going to let a guy like Cullen an MP for two bit nowhere stop them.
Gus, we’re in agreement on the Equal Senate idea. We could use one provincially too… maybe regional MLA’s with a legislature that requires a double majority on certain issues.
