Prince George, B.C.- The steel that will form the skeleton for the Prince George Library’s new “Sky Lab” has been delivered.

With a crane securely stationed on Patricia Boulevard, the pieces were lifted to   an opened window on the Bob Harkins’ branch upper floor.

SkyLab is an  elevated mezzanine that will “float” over the adult floor, adding nearly 1,000 square feet of new space.

The area will feature computer stations with Internet access and printing capabilities. Comfortable seatring will allow library users to read and enjoy the view of the library below, Connaught Hill, 15th Avenue, and downtown.

IDL Projects is the general contractor for the project which is expected to cost a little over $187 thousand dollars.

The project is being paid for with provincial and federal grants, donations and fundraising efforts, there are no municipal tax dollars involved in the project.

“The project is being paid for with provincial and federal grants, donations and fundraising efforts, there are no municipal tax dollars involved in the project.”

It makes me feel warm and fuzzy that it’s only my federal and provincial tax money going to fund this little internet cafe, and not my municipal taxes.

Steel is beautiful.

Didn’t SKylab burn up coming into contact with the earths atmosphere ?

You know the old saying, if you don’t use it, you lose it. That goes for all levels of government.

So, doesn’t really matter where the money comes from, as long as it isn’t the local library budget, might as well belly up to the trough and get your share. Can you blame them? Can you?

It’s free!

A quick perusal of BC Bid’s ‘closed’ opportunities confirms that this little job wasn’t tendered through conventional channels.

You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours?

Hey, does that guy on the roof have a safety harness on?

Didn’t Skylab create the Terminator?

P.G.Library Chief Librarian Allan Wilson has informed me that while the project was not on B.C. Bid ( the Library is NOT a government agency therefore there is no requirement for that) the project was advertised for tender, the bid process closed at the end of December and 4 bids were received. IDL was the successful proponent. As for the cost of the project 75% came the way of donations.
Hope this clears up any questions.
