Prince George, B.C. – In an event that is the first of its kind, Prince George Mayor Shari Green and several members of Council ( Councillors Skakun and Stolz were not present), handed out the social and cultural grants to 17 organizations this afternoon.
“Many of the organizations wanted to have a chance to actually talk with members of Council” says Communications Director Chris Bone “This was an opportunity to have that happen, and I was happy to organize it.”
In all, just over $315 thousand dollars in grants were delivered.
Mayor Green welcomed all the participants, and on behalf of Council, thanked them for their dedication and hard work “I am so pleased to be able to recognized the work of the organizations who make Prince George a great place to work, live and play” said the Mayor. She noted the 17 organizations offer a variety of programs “The initiatives are diverse and reflect the work of staff and an army of volunteers.”
In the past, the groups received their grants via cheque that had been mailed to them.”This has been a great event” Mayor Green told those in attendance, “I hope we can do this every year to celebrate.”

didn’t Shari call and ask that her picture be taken off 0-250
$118,000 for Theatre North West
$60,000 for the symphony
Who called us rednecks without culture ?
how many attend theatre and symphony in a year? if total is 60,000 then city is subsidising almost $3. per attendee!! how many other orginizations get this amount of support?? this just shows who has political influence in PG.
I question the wisdom of supporting TNW to the tune of $118K. With the exception of the Symphony Orchestra and community arts council, all of the other grant recipients are basically charitable organizations.
TNW, while worthy of praise for their productions, is not an organization that should be supported by public money. If they, and the orchestra cannot survive on their ticket sales then maybe they should be allowed to fail, or perhaps their boosters could pay more, or apply for a bingo license, hold a bottle drive, sell boxed nuts, like so many other societies and special interest groups have to do to stay afloat.

Ditto, Metalman.
