Prince George, B.C.- Earth Day 2012 is still three weeks away ( April 22nd), but the College of New Caledonia in Prinice George is getting a jump start on “green” efforts.
CNC is presenting its first Sustainability Showcase today.
From 10 this morning until 2 this afternoon, the public showcase in the College’s atrium will feature a compost information session as well as an information fair with 20 exhibitors from the Prince George area.
“We want to showcase some of the things in our community where people can make a difference,” said Tammy Barker, Sustainability Showcase organizer. “There are so many green things we can do from recycling cardboard and tin cans to electronics, paint and chemicals. Even shopping locally can have an impact.”
CNC’s green efforts include the installation of a solar hot water heating system at the student residence, solar collectors at the technical education centre that provide domestic hot water for the building, and this September, the Nicholson campus which is home to the heavy duty mechanics program will star accepting used oil and antifreeze for the entire CNC community.
As for Earth Day 2012, the theme this year is “Mobilize the Earth”. More than one billion people from around the world are expected to take part in some way in Earth Day events aimed at collecting “A billion acts of Green”. You can visit the Earth Day 2012 website here.
