Prince George, B.C. – Police in Canmore, Alberta have confirmed that the pilot who was killed in the crash of a helicopter near that community Friday was 28-year-old Matthew Goodine of Prince George.
The helicopter, operated by Kananaskis Heli Tours, went down around 10:30MT Friday morning in a remote part of Grotto Mountain. Goodine died of his injuries while awaiting transport to hospital in Calgary. The passengers in the helicopter, two couples from Britain, suffered non-life threatening injuries. They were hospitalized in Canmore and Calgary, but all have since been released.
The cause of the crash is not known. Weather was described as favourable at the time, although a heavy snowfall did begin about 15 minutes after the crash. It took rescuers several hours to reach the crash site.
Transportation Safety Board investigators may not be able to access the site until next week sometime because poor weather is forecast over the next two days.
