Safe Injection Site Poll Results Due Today

Prince George, B.C.- The issue of safe, supervised injection sites, is the subject of a public opinion poll conducted by some UNBC students and the results of that poll will be released later today..
The students in Political Science 320 have been conducting a research project since February. The project has been looking at the community’s interest in creating a Supervised Injection Site in the region. The opinion poll asked community members if they support the idea of Supervised Injection Sites, and if they believe one would be appropriate for their City.
“The importance of this research goes beyond the classroom setting” says Project representative Kassidy Woods. She says the project “develops a greater depth of knowledge not only for the students but for the community as well.”
The issue is not new to this region.
In early 2009, the Medical Health Officers in the province met in Prince Rupert and passed a resolution in favour of supervised safe injection sites as a means of reducing the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C. Supervised injection sites also reduce the possibility of a drug overdose.
At that time, then Chief Medical Health Officer for Northern Health, Dr. David Bowering, was quoted as saying safe injection sites, “Make the best of a bad situation” and reduce harm to the user and to their neighbourhoods. “The evidence is there that safe injection sites reduce harm” said Dr. Bowering.

I am sure if thier focus group was the urbanite latte swilling yuppie crowd they have up at UNBC it will show a resounding approval rating.
Guess it will depend on where and who this group asks. I have asked at leat 30 people so far ranging from business to students etc and not one has been polled………..

It astounds me how hostile a lot of contributers to Opinion 250 can be towards those involved in education, hence the educated. Anybody care to explain why this is?
Good question. I don’t know about But’s case, but I have observed that the less education one has in general, the more hostile they tend to be towards those who are more formally educated.
I’ve wondered that as well Krusty. I just think it’s too bad that we can’t all share our opinions in a civilized manner, without resorting to name calling and reducing people to stereotypes.

guesswhat,
I’m pretty sure that’s not how polling works. You survey a sample of people, not everyone.
I’m excited to see what they have to say. When will Opinion 250 be posting this?

just throwing this out there: these guys ARE in fact students. they are learning as they go, and it’s great that they are getting out there and getting involved in their community- REGARDLESS of the topic. why do people go get educations? TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE in (hopefully) their community! kudos to them and all the efforts they have made.
from what i understand these students were located in various places over town, and if you had heard about it (its been covered in the local news from the beginning), it is YOUR civic duty to go out and contribute- this is just another example of lack of citizen (and voter) participation!
if YOU wanted your voice and opinion to be heard on this topic- this survey was your chance! if you chose not to participate then it was a wasted opportunity.
One has to ask yourself, wHERE do the users get their illegal drugs from? Simple, they ROB someone in their neighborhood, use the money to pay a drug dealer off the street to get their stuff. Then they’re welcomed at the safe site, no problem. Unfortunately, two illegal acts have to be committed before they get their next fix.
