Second LNG Export Licence Issued
Prince George, B.C.- The second licence to export liquefied natural gas has been approved.
The 20 year licence has been granted to BC LNG Export Co-operative to export liquefied natural gas from Kitimat.
The LNG facility will be located on the west bank of the Douglas Channel in the District of Kitimat. BC LNG Export Co-operative intends to ship up to 1.8 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas annually to markets in Asia.
The natural gas would be transported to the proposed Douglas Channel terminal on the existing Pacific Northern Gas Pipeline and potentially on the proposed Pacific Trail Pipeline.
The proposed liquefied natural gas facility is undergoing an environmental assessment in accordance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act.
The initial phase of the facility is expected to be in operation by late 2013 or early 2014 and, if it proceeds, would represent the very first liquefied natural gas exports from Canada.
Comments
There is already a pipeline across the north? So if all pipelines get approved, there will be 3 new pipelines. Natives will be overjoyed at this prospect.
Natives are already on board with these plants.
Plant is actually being built on Native Lands in Kitimat. Natural gas piping has much less environmental issues if a leek occurs as it can be flared same with sea transport even liquid natural gas will not mix with water and can be flared off. You might have an impressive fire but as the gas was going to be end use burned anyway there is little environmental impact.
