Child Safety Highlighted This Week
Sunday, April 15, 2012 @ 9:10 AM
Prince George, B.C. – April 15-21 is Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Week in British Columbia to recognize the devastating impacts of child sexual abuse and the importance of working together to keep children safe.
Conservative estimates indicate approximately 10 percent of boys and 20 percent of girls in B.C. have been the victim of sexual abuse.
Sexual abuse may be associated with a host of personal, social and health problems including the loss of self esteem, relationship problems, mental health problems, problematic substance use, economic hardship, homelessness and suicide.
Public awareness, community education and clinical services and support for children, youth and families, including those provided by Sexual Abuse Intervention Programs (SAIP) throughout B.C., are key to addressing the issue. The Province also operates Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) units, which provide specialized medical assessment for children and youth who have been, or are suspected of being sexually and/or physically abused. The SCAN units are located in every region of the province.
There’s a toll-free 24 hour helpline for children – 310-1234 – which can be accessed from anywhere in B.C. No area code is required. Anyone can call –children or youth who need help, parents in crisis who are afraid they might hurt their children or anyone who knows or suspects a child is being abused or neglected.

Those numbers seems extremely high… 10% of boys and 20% of girls… I just can’t imagine it being that high. The prisons would be full if that was the case. If it really is that high than we have a serious problem here in Canada and far too many people are getting away with far too much… or either that or the statistics are counting things like inappropriate hugs as a sexual attack… I don’t know, but I find it hard to believe the numbers are that high.
Those numbers seem very accurate. Sexual abuse has been prevalent since the 50’s but it’s now something that’s getting reported more. More awareness = More reporting. The ironic, yet sad, correlation about this is that those who commit sexual abuse against children, had more than likely, suffered some sort of abuse as a child. That’s definitely not to give the offender an excuse; it just shows how sexual abuse can be a horrible cycle. PS: Inappropriate, is inappropriate, is inappropriate. Thanks 250 for posting this.
AgentKJ! You are exactly right in your comments. It is sad but true!
“Those numbers seem very accurate. Sexual abuse has been prevalent since the 50’s”
Good Lord ….. Child Sexual Abuse has a history as long as human history. Just that it was not known in that way and statistics not kept and spread out to the general public.
Want to move closer to the reality of the situation so that you understand how deeply rooted child abuse and child sexual abuse is in our various societies, then start by reading the link below.

Human nature is not very nice when looking at it from the 21st century western civilization perspective.
We have come a long way and we have a long way left to go. We can progress much further much more quickly when we understand how deep the roots are.
From the above link comes the question:
“Can we afford not to teach parenting?”
Like the promotion of eating fruit and vegetables in order to try to break a cycle, should we not be doing the same with a much more important aspect of our social well-being?
Just let the day care lady raise and discipline your kid. Then the teachers can try to teach them to read. Then “maybe” you can be very proud how you raised yer kid.
There is another kind of sexual abuse rampant in our city which has to do with City Council and Northern health ignoring the clear and urgent message by Dr. M. Buzalaf, 2004,Journal of Dentistry for Children – 71:110-113. Buzalaf states:
“ALL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE RISKS OF PREPARING INFANT FORMULA WITH FLUORIDATED WATER AND GIVE PRECISE RECOMMENDATIONS TO THEIR PATIENTS. ADDITIONALLY, THIS INFORMATION SHOULD BE EMPHASIZED IN PUBLIC HEALTH POLICIES.”
Clearly, every day that this is ignored further jeopardizes the health and well being of the most vulnerable among us, our children.
Please advise Mayor Green and Council, as well as Northern Health of this travesty and encourage them to get rid of water fluoridation that we’ve had since 1955. Water fluoridation is a practice that is out-of-date and not necessary. You can get a six-month fluoride treatment from your dentist, take fluoride drops, fluoride mouth rinse or fluoride tooth paste.
Our infants’ and children’s health must be protected so that our children grow up healthy and happy!
According to Dr. Arvid Carlson, Recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine states:
“Fluoridation is against all principles of modern pharmacology. It’s really obsolete.”
