P.G. Signs Off on RCMP Contract
Prince George, B.C.- The City of Prince George has signed off on the contract to have the RCMP provide policing services in the city. The City says the recently announced changes in RCMP member compensation raised concern throughout the province, but appreantly Prince George was prepared.
In a release issued this afternoon, the City says "The 2012 increase was anticipated by the City and the approved 2012 Police Protection budget is positioned to handle the bulk of the increase." That increase was expected to be about 1.5% but it turns out it is closer to 1.75%. There is also information the increase for next year will be 2%. The release from the City says " There may also be cost reductions flowing from the changes to RCMP compensation and along with the Province, the City awaits further information from the Federal Government in order to assess the overall impact."
So it is not yet clear just what the final financial implications will be.
The release from the City also indicates that while an option for municipalities is to establish its own police department, a recent review of the costs involved conducted by the City of Red Deer indicated the costs would be $4 million dollars higher than Red Deer’s current costs It is a 20 year agreement

We need to review our policing needs in view of the reduction in population in the area, and the reduction in crime.
We also have the drug inforcement squad here now that must be taking some of the work away from the regular police.
In addition there is the staffing contingent, and of course the Community Policing Program. All need to be looked at with a view of finding another way to do the same thing.
One thing is obvious. We cannot continue to pay increases to Police, and other departments in the City, especially as more of the population retires, and had its income reduced.
How long do you think we can increase costs, on reduced income?? Not very long I would say.
I don’t understand the term “signed off” used in this context. I would assume that it means no thanks but the rest of the post seems to suggest otherwise.
I believe the RCMP should be accountable to an independant body as per any wrong doing such as in the past and thewre was plenty of wrong doing to go around. IMO
This whole police contract matter seems quite strange. First of all Shirley Bond signs a contract that contained a wage increase for the RCMP members that she was totally unaware of and she is going to get in touch with Ottawa to find out what was going on. Meantime the city, the story says, was apparently prepared. “The 2012 increase was anticipated by the City and the approved 2012 Police Protection budget is positioned to handle the bulk of the increase.” Bond, sitting at the table the contract was negotiated at, knows of no wage increase but the city was prepared for the announced changes in compensation. Could someone please explain.
I can’t wait for my raise too!
It means Sheri smiled and blinked, Krause nodded okay and Stolz picked lint off his lapel.
I believe the explanation lies in that the BC Provincial Police is the RCMP and the municipal police in many communities is the RCMP as well.
I am not sure how the agreements might be linked or might not be linked.
Of course, the RCMP is a single contractor providing services to different jurisdictions. I would think that they have one agreement with its employees, so any raise would be the same whether provincial or municipal.
I also assume that all agreements have some sort of flow through clause where the increase flows from Ottawa to the municipal and provincial jurisdiction and then on to the local taxpayer and the provincial taxpayer. Its called, user fee. :-)
Now, if the feds would pay for the increase, then we would pay foir it through the federal government and it would be considered a subsidy for the local jurisdiction. :-)
In any case, the buck stops at the taxpayers’ kitchen table.
The one thing I know, not a cent of my money is going to pay for the Vancouver Police, the Abbotsford Police, the Nelson Police, the Ontario Police, Toronto Police, etc.

Green is lying. She first stated she didnt know about the raise in the RCMP contract and how she is saying they have already budgeted for it…
What gives Ms. Mayor ???
The RCMP ia the only job where you can go to school for 6 months and recieve a wage of 88,000$. There are RCMNP OFficers who make over 100,000 a year EASY! They do it with a base salary around 90,000 and they work overtime as much as they want. They have NO sick days as if they dont want to come to work they just call in sick. If you want to go off on stress leave you can for as long as you want I personally know of 2 officers off, 1 for 2 years and counting and the other 17 months and yet you will see them in the gym and riding their horse….But there on “stress leave”?! The RCMP is the biggest cash cow Canada has. And they are Never challenged about ANY of it as the public always chimes in “Well its a stressfull job.” Are you kidding? Yes police work CAN be stressfull but no more than Corrections Officers, Bylaw Officers, Conservation Officers, Ambulance, Soldiers etc. We send guys to Afghanistan making a pittance. Yet NO Law Enforcement body is anywhere near the RCMPs pay scale. It needs to end. People complain about the Senate, well the RCMP is a career where once you get past Depot…you are set for life…..and were all paying for it. Hell to be a esthetician you go to school for a year, a massage therapist 3 but we hand someone a gun after 6 months and pay them an INSANE amount of money….and it just keeps going up and up!!
Zues cops go to school for 10 months..i know not much better. But the thing is they are not accountable to the communities they serve. we dont have the power to fire cops whos conduct is repeatedly questionable or down right illegal. all investigations are done internally and from what i understand the external review board is made up of x cops who can be bias! we need accountability at the community level.
The Cadet Training Program is an 24-week basic training course, I think you are thinking of the municipal Police training that they do at the JIBC but TRUST ME, Depot is 6 months long! Thats what I mean, Winnipeg City Police, vancouver etc have longer training courses and less pay?! I agree 100% that you must have local input but the problem is that we are dealing with a Federal para military organization that for far to long has been able to run themselves with no checks and balances on behavior etc. Look just recently when the Province made threats about not renewing there contract in b.C….the RC’s just threatened to pull out and we eventually buckled and agreed. Why do Quebec, Newfoundland, ontario etc have there own force? we are stuck it seems in B.C with a force full of misconduct and high wages!
Boy, I really hate the whining on this site, eh Zuess88?
Are these increases in wages to the RCMP ultimately in the city’s hands? It seems as if there are only two options: 1. pay the 1.75% wage increase, or 2. establish a municipal police force. Sure paying for an increase year after year sucks, but it sure beats establishing a PG police force.
Zues88 they are still hiring if you have kept your record clean and can do the job. The pay is #4 for police forces in Canada btw. The respect you get from the public is awesome, and you rarely get shot at sign up today.
LOL “Rarely get shot at”! Really, the average RCMP Officer coasting to retirement has NEVER even had to draw there weapon let alone get shot at. In order to “Do the job” I am assuming you mean get unlimited sick days….as in you wake up a bit tired and just call the watch commander and say “I am sick…cant make it tonight!” that kinda make it. Or the kind where you get in a scuffle with someone and then go on stress leave for unlimited years cuz all you have to do is tell your Dr. your “stressed”. And they are #4 because they have it in their contract to NEVER be less paid then the top 3 thats why! As for rerspect I would suggest given what I have seen on this site that City bylaw Officers get much more abuse yet there not making 90 grand a year. I see Provincial Corrections Officers working day in and day out with the criminlas and are making Far less as well. But I guess the public seems to think that the RCMP has a exclusive hold on “stress” in the workplace while doing Law Enforcement.
Guba, Why does it beat establishing a P.G police Force? Is Chilliwack having the problems we are? Or Nelson B.C? They have good policing (Some may even argue better) at less the cost of the RCMP, how does that not make sense?
Apologies from my end. The last paragraph confused me. I thought it meant that the costs for a PG police force would cost more.
In that case, maybe a PG police force does need to be considered! Though with how brilliant this city is with its funds, I’d be a little hesitant…
