Cullen Moves Up in the Ranks

Friday, April 20, 2012 @ 4:00 AM
Prince Rupert, B.C. – Skeena Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen is heading to the front bench of the Official Opposition.

Cullen confirmed Thursday that NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair offered him the job of NDP House Leader and he’s accepted the post. As House Leader, Cullen will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the NDP in the House of Commons.

Cullen says he’ll continue to put the northwest on the map and make sure that people in Ottawa know the issues important to residents. He says it’s also about making sure his party will be ready to govern.

“I see all these decisions that are coming down from pipelines to native rights to the environment and I’m learning that this government needs to be ejected from office because they’re doing a lot of damage. I actually think they know that too and they’re trying to do as much as they can before they get the boot.”

Mulcair is expected to unveil the rest of his shadow cabinet today.

Comments

Cullen is level headed, articulate and seems to be quite well balanced in his approach to issues. he also took the high road in the NDP leadership debates and refused to muckrake while some of the other candidates got into the go nowhere name calling nonsense. Cullen’s big problem was not being well-known in other parts of Canada, particularly in the big two, Ontario and Quebec. However this posting as House Leader should increase his stature within the party. He will be well positioned to challenge for the NDP leadership down the road. Patience.

Of course Cullen accepted the post.
That was the whole point…raising his “profile” in the federal NDP party.
He never actually expected to win…there was never even a hope of that.

I think Cullen had real hope to win the leadership… he was the best candidate in the race by far, just not known well enough to be trusted by those back east. I agree that this post will allow him the opportuntiy to become known by the rest of the country. Its the perfect position for a MP like Cullen with his excellent people skills and ability to bridge consensus among feuding members in his own party.

I think the man has a bright future and is probably the ndp and BC’s best hope at ever having a prime minister from BC or the ndp. IMO

Well said One Democrat and Eagleone Mr Cullen was an unknown to myself as well until the leadership race. I was most impressed with his no nonsense and common sense aproach and with his fluid expression of his train of thought.

No nonsense approach and common sense? Ya right. That will take him far in Ottawa. (sarcasm off)
