Thieves Make Off With Copper Cache

Saturday, April 21, 2012 @ 9:56 AM

Prince George, BC – Prince George RCMP say thieves forced their way through a gate and into an industrial building to steal approximately $50-thousand dollars worth of copper wire.

Police believe the robbery occurred sometime between Monday and Thursday afternoon of this week.  The wire had been inside a vacant building on Great Street in the BCR Industrial site.

Media Liaison Officer, Corporal Craig Douglass, is reminding businesses that work with or deal with copper wire, and copper in general, to take extra precautions to ensure their supplies are secure – particularly as the warmer weather makes access to properties that much easier for thieves looking to capitalize on the valuable commodity.

As stated by me before, I must commend the Mounties for doing what they are trained to do best and that is to constantly keep warning the victims of crime to be more careful. No warning to the thieves “IF” they get caught. Business as usual folks, just carry on.

Just keep an eye open to someone wanting to sell copper in a 1,000 mile radius. It’s not worth $50,000 to the thief until he can find a buyer. Hmm! Wonder how many dealers there are in western Canada that buy copper?

I wonder if there are any rules pertaining to bringing certain metals to a place lick Alan’s scrape and salvage ? Or are they more like all the second hand stores that Have rules but rarely if ever follow them ?

“Sorry, but we overpurchased about $50,000 dollars worth of copper. And whoever “sold” it to us won’t give us a refund. Wanna buy it? Cheap.”

Theft on this scale might mean that the wire is going to be installed on a job somewhere. It is a lot of work to convert a manufactured electrical wire product to bare ‘clean’ copper. Of course it happens, funny how that works. They are too lazy to work a regular job, but will risk their freedom to steal something, then spend days converting it into a form they can sell.
