Major Explosion And Fire At Lakeland Mill In Prince George

Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 10:35 PM

Prince George- There has been a major explosion and fire at the Lakeland Mills in Prince George.

Reports indicate that there was an explosion and then a fire at the mill which is situated several hundred meters from the edge of the downtown core in Prince George.

The area has been blocked off as firefighters attempt to control the blaze.

The University Hospital of Northern BC has declared a Code Orange, meaning that all resources are being mobilized to treat the injured mill workers.  UHNBC Director of Communications, Steve Raper, says "We’ve had 12 arrive so far.  We’re expecting some more arrivals quite shortly."

Raper says the injuries range from minor to serious.  He says, "There’s no confirmation of any patient transfers (out to other hospitals) at this time.  Those decisions will be made by physicians."

As for the number of injured mill workers the hospital is anticipating, Raper says, "I can’t give a concrete number so I’d hate to speculate at this time because we don’t know how many were working there – how many are missing – so it would be premature for me to speculate."

About 150 people work at the mill.

Our thoughts are with all involved and we hope any injuries are minor with no loss of life.

Prince George is a tight community, my prayers are being sent, please let there be no fatalities.

A tragic day for British Columbia..

Stay strong

It’s a major fire. I viewed it from the Cutbanks. It would be a miracle if there where not some serious injuries.

Prayers are with any involved. I didn’t see it until it was at least 30 mins old. A photo from Cranbrook Hill.
