Liberals Throw $2M at the Possibility of Hosting Soccer Games
Prince George, B.C. – The Province is providing $2 million to help bring the largest women’s sporting event in the world to British Columbia, announced Ida Chong, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development.
Vancouver is one of six candidate cities – Edmonton, Montreal, Moncton, Ottawa and Winnipeg are the others – vying to host soccer matches in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015. By providing this level of support, payable if the city is selected as a host, the B.C. government is ensuring Vancouver meets the requirements of a host city. The federal government will match all funding provided by the provinces. Hundreds of thousands of spectators are expected to attend the 2015 World Cup matches, and many would be visitors from outside of B.C. The 2015 World Cup will provide increased exposure for the province’s tourism, recreation and hospitality sectors.
The ministry expects that the province would recover its $2 million investment in the 2015 World Cup from increased provincial taxes and higher revenue earned by the BC Pavilion Corporation, which operates BC Place Stadium where the matches would be played.

But I thought we were broke and seriously in debt?
Where is all this money coming from that the B.C.Liberals are throwing around?
Who isn’t telling the truth about what is left in the kitty?
Would the B.C.Liberals lie and manipulate?
We have seen some bad governments over the years, but I doubt we have never seen one with a penchant for spin and dishonesty quite like this one!
By the time we finally get to the polls, there won’t be much left…if anything.
Only after this government is gone will we get down to the truth.
An indepth forensic audit of the provinces finances is in order…follow the money…always follow the money!
I’m curious as to what is going to happen when they finally open the leaky roof on BC Place. The design probably looks good on paper but it really reminds me of the original roof on Montreal’s BIG OWE.
After the initial commissioning procedure it works just fine.
It’s a great new facility. Liberal or NDP, who cares?
It was a stadium comment, where did you insert politics ??
They should put the picures of MLA’s on the soccer balls, this would maybe give some soccer players an incentive to kick more often and harder.
I suspect that a lot of the money they are spending is coming from the **Big Winfall** the HST. Then of course we have gambling, ICBC transfers, BC Hydro, Liquor Taxes, BCLC, Fines, etc; just to name a few. The export tax on lumber to the US must bring in an additional $260 Million a year, which offsets their loss from stumpage on beetle kill timber.
The whole province knows the opposition of the opposition party against the re-furbishing of BCPlace Stadium, just like it was against the building of the original BCPlace Stadium.
The roof works very well and the stadium is a great new facility.
Wow.
Imagine if that money was invested in Education or Healthcare. People would flock to BC because it is truly a wonderful place to live…Not just to visit. Instead, people visit BC and leave grateful they don’t live here.
Prince George…..
I don’t think the roof has been tried more than once or twice. Might be pre-mature to say it works very well. I just heard on Global that BC Place is having an open house today. Lets see if they open the top.
Ok Prince George, we get it, its a nice facility.
Its all about priorities,,,kinda like my household…on the one hand I have kids that need braces, on the other I would like to have a shiney new boat.
Telling my kids we have to cut back on spending because we just don’t have the money for braces, while I am at the boat store purchasing a new boat just doesn’t make sense.
Those kinds of priorities seem to make sence to you and the provincial government.
I guess this PrinceGeorge must a liked the OWE limp iks too. And the 5 or 10 BILLION IT COST US ALL. Seems to enjoy seeing billions of OUR tax money going to support this garbage. Time for a province wide strike to protest this insane waste of our taxes. And time to force this corrupt HST loving goverment from office.
It is interesting that Zimbabwe and Canada were in the running for hosting the 2015 world event. They were the only two bids submitted by December 2010.
Zimbabwe withdrew 3 months later. Reason? Political turmoil and did not have the funds to host the event.
So, Zimbabwe is not able to make the World Cup into a money making venture while Canada can?
The Germans had a budget of â¬51 million wich was supposed to be covered 50/50 by ticket sales and sponsors.
Halifax dropped out of the original 7 cities. It was proposing to build a $57 million stadium. It was turned down by City Council.

Does anyone know how many matches are supposed to be played in Vancouver?
Amazing how much money the Liberals suddenly have for things they desire.
It’s fooling no one that they’re trying to $$$buy$$$ their way to the next election.
Gotta love the headline… Opinion250 is trying to be a lot like The Tyee.
The word “throw” is interesting, isn’t it JohnnyBelt? ;-)
If they are throwing it, I wonder where they are doing that. Maybe I can catch some.
“The 2015 World Cup will provide increased exposure for the province’s tourism, recreation and hospitality sectors.”
So how much money is BC throwing at at its tourism, recreation and hospitality sector evey year? Is this $2 million new money that is being thrown or would it have been thrown at something similar anyway?
I love throwing money around … LOL
Gus:
I wonder if Ida Chong could answer that question or should we be asking the Minister of Innovative Tourism Jobs.
Looking at the U-20 World Cup for reference, Burnaby hosted 7 matches. That was at Swangard where max attendance was 10 000. I should point out that each match was a sell out.
With a reduced number of host cities for the 2015 Women’s World Cup, and an improved facility in BC Place, I would suspect that there would be many more matches in Vancouver.
And gus, somehow I think Canada is in a much better position than Zimbabwe to make a return on the 2015 World Cup. When Canada hosted the U-20 World Cup back in 2007, it set an overall attendance record for the tournament.
Other than the fact that Zimbabwe is not a politically/security stable country, it has a 95% unemployment rate. It can provide a person for every ticket purchaser to guide them around the community and still make money.
Sell out does not matter. Attendance records don’t matter. Tell me what the net return was on a game.
Sales have to be in the order of $30million to generate $2million in PST @7%.
These sales would have to be above what would normally be spent by visitors who would come anyway, soccer or not.
35 cents a person! Cheaper than going downtown and getting harrassed by the entitled!
Yep. You’re right, gus. Zimbabwe’s ability to host a world class event is comparable to Canada. Heck, they might even be able to do it better.
Part of me wonders why countries like Vanuatu and Mozambique aren’t clamouring to host international sporting events since they clearly would be able to make money from it following your plan.
Here is the financial report for the U20 World Cup:
http://torc.linkbc.ca/torc/downs1/FIFAEconomicImpactAnalysis.pdf
The tournament was a success from a sporting and economic point of view. Yes dollars and cents are important when staging these events, but don’t underestimate the cultural impact. Growing the sport of soccer and increasing the involvement of girls in soccer is not a bad thing.
“Growing the sport of soccer and increasing the involvement of girls in soccer is not a bad thing.”
No, it isn’t. Having 60,000 to 100,000 people sit around hollering and rioting is not my idea of a sport.
Having a few hundred playing the game on the Rotary field is.
We are paying far too much for big star players in ALL spectator sports that do not do a thing for the health and the pocket books of those watching them.
But, I guess it allows the kids in countries such as Zimbabwe to dream of being a big star.
