Offers Of Support Coming From Across Country In Wake Of Lakeland Tragedy

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 @ 4:08 AM

Prince George, BC – Prince George Mayor Shari Green says there has been an outpouring of support to the community and to Lakeland Mills in the wake of Monday evening’s fatal blast.

The mayor was in Vancouver Monday evening, where she had been attending meetings and says she was in constant communication with both local MLAs, Pat Bell and Shirley Bond, who were in Victoria, through the evening.  "I was in constant communication with Ministers Bond and Bell – relaying information as I learned it – and they, in turn, relaying that to the Premier, so she was certainly abreast throughout of all the details."

Green says, "They have offered whatever resources are needed to help us get through this situation at this time in terms of support for families and anything the province can do."

"We’ve had the same from our MPs and mayors across the north and people across the region," the mayor adds.  "Including Mayor (Luke) Strimbold from Burns Lake, who sent me a note at 1:30am (Monday) morning."

While speaking at a joint news conference at the Prince George RCMP detachment yesterday, Green would not speculate on whether Lakeland Mills will re-build the sawmill, saying, "(It’s) too soon to judge that and I won’t speak to that, that’s a question for Lakeland Mills and today the focus is on their employees and their injuries and so that’s where we’re concentrating our effort today."
