Tax Rate for 2012 a Done Deal

Prince George, B.C.- The tax rate for 2012 in Prince George has  been set but  it was not unanimously  supported.  Councillors Garth Frizzell, Dave Wilbur, Brian Skakun  and Albert Kohler  opposed the adoption of  the rate which was presented as "option four". Mayor Shari Green,  Councillors  Cameron Stolz, Murry Krause, Frank Everitt, and Lyn Hall all supported  option foour.

The Finance and Audit Committee noted options 3 and four were acceptable but 4 was  the preferred  option. 

Residential property owners can expect to pay just under $7.80 cents  for  each $1,000 of assessment.

With the average residential assessment at $214,844.00  the taxes ( pre-grant) would be $1674.80.  That is about  $35.45 more than what would have  been paid on the same property last year if the assessment was the same as it had been in 2011.

Keep in mind, the tax rates selected are expected to have the following impact on the average assessed property within each of the categories:

Average residential property tax will increase by 3.95%
 
The average business property tax would increase by 5.72%.
 
The average utilities property tax would increase by 26.28%.
 
The average major industrial property tax would decrease by 0.73%.
 
The average light industrial property tax would increase by 3.95%.
 
In previous years, the City has provided a comparison of  ten properties in the City and the impact the new tax rate would have on each of those properties. No such comparison was offered with this tax rate presentation.

Saanich will waive a $149.60 garbage collection fee for a resident because her annual recycling efforts have eliminated the need for a garbage truck to stop at her house.

Lovely. Raise the residential taxes but lower big industry’s ? Sounds like someone wants to be a Liberal. Thanks for the gouge.

Seems taxes for business are a cost of doing business and are an expense when filing so the actual cost to business is somewhat less than stated.
Not so for the home owner. Once again services decrease yet the city digs deeper into the homeowners pockets.
I am sure a lot of people would be real happy to receive a 3.95% rise in income.

If they’d actually fix the roads and not give it to their friends (remember all the money the City gave to Commonwealth?), or just waste it on white elephant projects like the district energy system, I wouldn’t have as much of an issue with this.

Our taxes are going to continue to rise until someone addresses the fundamental issue; and that is the fact that there are way too many people gorging themselves at the municipal trough.

I had some degree of hope when Green axed a bunch of non-existent positions but my hope quickly disappeared when she dropped $75,000 a year on a secretary.

Maybe next election?

I would like to hear more about why major industry gets a decrease in their taxes. Maybe the City could post that or respond to this. I would like to see it proven that major industry is having a harder time than the other tax payers.

Let’s see. Elected 2011. Sworn in Jan.2012. This will be increase number 2 in a space of 4 months.Great job council.

my property tax has increased all 11 years I lived in my house and the services have not even close to gotten better. what a joke, give yourselves another raise council, you deserve it. also, after the Canada Games is a memory, so had better be the tax…I would say something libelous about the city but I don’t want to get sued.
