Chart shows Fraser River Levels at South Fort George Park
Prince George, B.C.- The Fraser River level has receded somewhat from a weekend high of 8 meters at South Fort George.
“The lower level snow had melted” says Prince George Fire and Rescue Chief John Lane . He says that lower level rapid snow melt caused the Fraser River to climb on the weekend, but not enough to have any advisories or warnings issued.
Cottonwood Island Park was a little soggy, but so far, there have been no moves to make it off limits to the public.
Chief Lane says the initial plans are being put in to place for the spring freshet . Chief Lane says while the Fraser River’s rise on the weekend was dramatic, there are no signs of an impending flood. He also says the Nechako is running high and fast, but it too is below flood warning levels.
The snowpack for the Upper Fraser and the Nechako is well above the norm for this time of year, raising concerns this year’s flow in the two rivers could be extremely high. The weather will be the determining factor in possible flooding “What you want are warm days and cool nights so the melt is slow” says Chief Lane.
