When down at the mouth of the willow there was about 14 jet boats all going up the willow at the same time about 2:30 today. They were all going hard and in a big gourp. I can see how this can happen. I was told jet boat accidents have happened a few times up river trying to jump log jams. Very sad I hope they will be found that is very cold water. I didn,t see the search helicopter until about 6:30pm.
#462…..They were locals which really doesn’t matter anyways. If someone is in need of help, you help! If you went somewhere else and found yourself in trouble, would you not want help or be denied cause you aren’t from that area? It’s called compassion and that is what is wrong with this world, people are always thinking of themselves. I don’t care how much it cost to save a life since you can’t put a price on a life. Good for you for having sypathy for the families but shame on you for even mentioning the cost of rescues for non locals. Rediculous!
I echo Poolchick’s sentiments. The S&R people are vastly underfunded by the provincial government, yet they are worth their weight in gold.
SAR people should not only be well-funded, they should also be able to take advantage of a similar federal tax credit available to volunteer firefighters – $3,000 for those contributing 200 or more hours per year. I’ll bet many SAR individuals in the PG area have that and more when all the training, exercises, meetings etc are taken into account.
SAR people volunteer firefighters and a few others are not volunteers – they are unpaid professionals – there is a big difference.
I know a number of marine SAR units are writing to their MPs to have their public protection service recognized with a well-deserved tax break. Perhaps land and swift water SAR in PG should do the same.
And MPs are writing to the Minister of Finance on behalf of volunteer emergency service providers.
I was hosting the pgsars.ca web site for free on my willowriver server when John Vogt was looking after it for many years. Your right the SAR folks don,t get near what they should funding for what they do. Same with volunteer firehalls. Still a sad ending to this. I think that,s three sunk boats in three years on the Willow maybe people will understand it is a dangerous river at times.
