Prince George, B.C.- Hundreds turned out to the CNC Lakeland Mill Fire Assistance fund fundraiser this afternoon at the main campus of the College of New Caledonia.  Early estimates suggest 1500 to 1800 people attended the event.
The three hour event boasted more than $15 thousand dollars worth of silent auctions, and a picnic spread that could fill you up for $10 bucks a plate. All proceeds to go to the Lakeland Mill Fire Assistance Fund.
On hand to experience the event were several Lakeland Mill employees and Sinclar Group President Greg Stewart “It’s a fantastic turnout” said Stewart “It’s great to see this community support for the Lakeland employees and to show that we’re all in this together and we’re going to get through it together.”

Professional Cook student Narissa Muxlow and Kiefer Abela spearheaded the event, which Narissa says was brought on by her personal experience of having family members who worked at the mill which exploded and burned to the ground April 23rd. “We just saw what was happening and we wanted to help.” Kiefer adds “We just wanted to see what we could do, and everyone in the community donated a lot of stuff, so it seems we have raised a lot of money, it’s been a big success today.”
Student Jessica Houston says the fundraiser was a natural for the Professional Cook program students who will graduate at the end of this week “We were thinking about what to do for our year end and we thought, let’s do something for the people, lets not spend our money on ourselves, let’s see what we can do with this. So we went out and got donations.  Everything here is donated, it’s amazing.”

The event not only raised money, it was also an educational experience for the students in learning the details of putting on a big event “Oh my gosh we learned so much” says Narissa Muxlow, “We didn’t really know how much it would take to go into this, and we learned organizing and fundraising and everything.”

The final tally for the event in the terms of dollars raised should be available tmorrow or Thursday.

Fantastic. I stopped in for lunch and to bid on the silent auction items that I liked.

What prince George lacks in esthetic, it makes up for with heart. This is proof that one (or a few) people can make a difference.
