Prince George, B.C. – Just two days before the trial was to start for a Fort Fraser man, accused of drug related charges, the charges have been stayed.
38 year old Murray Sholty and his brother, 34 year old Tony, were arrested in Newfoundland in October of 2010. The two were charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking after police searched a travel trailer and seized 117 pounds of marijuana said to be worth $1 million dollars.
Murray’s trial was to start Wednesday, but on Monday, the 14th, his lawyer was advised the Crown was staying the charges and the trial was cancelled.
Sholty says while he and his lawyer were fully prepared to defend his case, he says it was "satisfying" to see the Crown decide to “throw in the towel before stepping into the ring”.
Sholty says he was never involved in nor aware of the alleged illegal activity.
