Incident Closes Cameron St Bridge

Sunday, May 20, 2012 @ 8:16 PM
Prince George- Just before 3.00pm. today  North District RCMP Operational Communication Centre began receiving multiple 9-1-1 calls advising of a man attempting to jump from the Cameron Street Bridge in Prince George, BC.

Within a few minutes of the first 9-1-1 call, Prince George RCMP General Duty officers located a man on the outside of the railing on the east side of the bridge. The bridge was closed to traffic and officers began to speak with the man.   Prince George Fire Rescue and the BC Ambulance Service also attended the area.

At approximately 4:25 PM, RCMP Cpl. Dave Tyreman was able to convince the man to come back over the fence. Officers and a member of the BC Ambulance Service secured the man and assisted him over the railing. The man, a 45 year old Prince George resident suffering from a personal issue, was transported by the BC Ambulance Service to the University Hospital of Northern BC for treatment.

The Cameron Street bridge was reopened shortly after.

At the beginning of this on-going event, another RCMP officer requested the assistance of a passing jet boat operator in order to be on the water in the event a rescue was necessary. The local resident graciously agreed to assist and remained on the Nechako River with the police officer and two Prince George Fire / Rescue swift water trained personnel for the duration of the event.

The Prince George RCMP would like to thank the traveling public for their patience and would like to give a special thank you to the boat owner and his family for their assistance in this time sensitive incident.
