Family Day Selected

Monday, May 28, 2012 @ 12:26 PM

Prince George, B.C.- It’s official.  B.C.’s new statutory holiday will take place on the second  Mnday of February.  That means the first ever Family Day will be  February 11th, 2013.

Premier Christy Clark made the  announcement  about an hour ago.

The Canadian Federation  of Independent Business says there is still lots of work to be done on the "Family Day  File".

“Today’s announcement about which date Family Day will fall on gives small and medium-sized business owners in BC some certainty and allows them to plan ahead,” says Shachi Kurl, British Columbia Director of Provincial Affairs. “However, they are no further ahead in terms of the cost pressure they will face as a result of an added statutory holiday in this province.”

CFIB estimates Family Day will cost an average small business in BC paying an average wage to employees an extra $1135 for labour and other expenses.

“Independent businesses acknowledge that Family Day has the potential to increase employee morale, and that for some limited sectors, such as hospitality and tourism, there are opportunities for growth,” says Kurl. “However, the majority of our members are telling us they need mitigation to help them with the financial burden this holiday places squarely on their shoulders.”

In response, CFIB has approached the provincial government with a number of creative, cost-effective measures to do this, including a proposed BC Training Bonus program aimed at enhancing skills training and employee retention during times of labour shortages. The bonus would be paid directly to employees, not employers.

“As Family Day legislation is debated and enacted, CFIB is calling on all legislators to recognize these issues and take action.”

Why didn’t we synchronize this holiday with Alberta and every other jurisdiction? Should be third Monday.

answer: because that would promote family unity

Wondering how many votes they think they bought?

“Wondering how many votes they think they bought?”

None.

Yup, dumb, why even debate it, it should be the same date as Alberta.

Missed by a week. Did they release the results of the poll that was taken or did Christy pull it out of a hat ?

Who freaking cares when it is. Another day off with pay is what matters.

we can synchronize when the NDP wins and we join Alberta.

Other than access to seaports, why would Alberta want our problems ?

Why would we want Alberta’s?

Somebody in the Victoria legislature get chosen by the short straw system to throw a dart across the room onto a calendar? Keep throwing til you hit a Monday?

This is fantastic IMO. Its my boys first birthday, so I’ll have the day off work :)

I’d like to thank the province for honoring my son by giving everyone the day off and calling it family day, lol.

Alberta’s coincides with Ontario and the stock exchanges and a US holiday. It would make to much sense to follow the group. I like the idea of a February long week end, but how do you screw this up?

The Premier claimed that B.C. residents voted for the second Monday, at least that is how I heard it on the radio.
Any way you slice it, another statutory holiday is an increased burden for small business. Not just for the wages and benefits, but in lost production.
metalman.

What a pointless waste.

Like I mentioned before, many union shops already had this holiday added to their collective agreements years ago when the feds were trying to bring in this holiday country wide. They failed in that attempt.

It is called “Heritage day” and has been enjoyed by thousands of families for years.

Now these same shops get yet another stat holiday to enjoy. Congrats!

LMAO! I see the overseers are happy.
