You Can Run But You Cannot Hide

Tuesday, June 5, 2012 @ 3:45 AM
It’s been several decades since boxer Joe Louis  said "You can run but you can’t hide" on the eve of his fight with  Billy Conn.  Louis was referring to facing your fears.   But this week, the phrase took on a new meaning as  the internet  proved  it could  help in the capture of Lukas Rocco Magnotta wanted in connection with the recent death and dismemberment   of a man in Montreal.
Magnotta had bragged in his many writings on the internet of just how easy it is to disappear and never be found again.
He was arrested in an internet cafe in Berlin after a patron recognized him as wanted by Interpol.
Magnotta is accused of cutting up a man and then shipping some of the body parts to members of Parliament.
Just how small the world has become with the advent of the internet and the modern means of communicating were proven out in his capture.
Here we had a man sitting in a cafe half way around the world, apparently reading the internet about himself, when a patron who has read that police were looking for a man matching Magnotta’s description is sitting near him, and then reports that sighting to police.
Magnotta may have, along with thousands of other people in the world, believed that it is quite easy to disappear from your home country and then find anonymity and  a new life in another country.
In reality, the story and subsequent capture of Magnotta shows that you can run,  but you cannot hide in the modern world.
I’m Meisner and that’s one man’s opinion.

Oh I don’t know about the premise that you can run but cannot hide. I think a person would be able to “vanish” if they were smart enough to “be quiet” about themselves. But it was this guy’s way over the top narcissistic personality that led to his capture. The Interpol folks knew he would have to get to a computer to see what the world was saying about him, and that’s why it was just a matter of time before he was caught. But with just over 7 billion people on the planet, I think one could disappear with a little reconstructive surgery etc.

I agree with OneDemocrat. Many fugitives avoid capture for years and continue to do so. It depends on a variety of factors. Magnotta craved attention and was narcissistic, two factors that worked against him. Thankfully he is in custody.

I also agree ….. we have a case in this community, in fact. Just recall the fire at the airport hanger …….

An interesting read about the internet and disappearing.

I totally believe you can run and hide….. if you have enough cash, anything is possible.

Fat people can hide, but they can’t run. Just so ya know.

That is way roo funny, Harbinger. But, are you SURE they can hide?

In PG you hide in a pot hole. Lots to choose from.
