Prince George Coach Captures AHL Championship

Sunday, June 10, 2012 @ 9:23 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Prince George can lay claim to a major hockey championship, in a round about way.

The Norfolk Admirals beat the Toronto Marlies 6-1 Saturday to sweep the American Hockey League best-of-seven final and capture the Calder Cup.   The championship club is coached by Prince George native Jon Cooper, who in April was named the AHL’s coach of the year.

Cooper was hired by the Tampa Bay Lightning as the Admirals’ coach in August, 2010. Over the past two seasons he has led the club to a 94-44-10-8 regular season record. Norfolk set franchise records in the 2011-2012 season with 55 wins and 113 points to become the league’s regular season points champion.

Cooper played hockey at Notre Dame in Wilcox, Saskatchewan before moving on to Hofstra University on Long Island, New York. He played hockey and lacrosse there while earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration. After that he obtained a law degree in Lansing, Michigan but closed his law office in 2003 to focus on coaching hockey.

Who knows, we could see Cooper with the “big club” somewhere down the road.
