Meisner Pulls the Plug on Radio Show

Wednesday, June 13, 2012 @ 4:00 AM
Prince George- The man who hosted a Prince George radio talk show on and off over the past 38 years in Prince George is calling it quits.
Ben Meisner, who most recently hosted a talk show on CFISFM, says he will not return to the air this fall.

Meisner had been hosting a talk show  between 9:00 and 10am. at CFISFM for nearly the past four years, a program which was carried through live streaming audio here on  Opinion250.  He started at that station in September 2008.
“The time has come to call it quits" says Meisner who has been in the radio business since 1956 .
"I want to devote more time to Opinion250 where my main interest lies" says Meisner who is the president of Opinion250 News Inc.   "The internet is the future and while Opinion250 came on the scene perhaps a few years too early, it has grown into holding a commanding lead in where people go to get their news. It’s a bit like the old days in radio where you ran out to cover every story that came along. Somewhere along the line that was lost in radio and I must say I miss it."
As for regrets?  "None" says Meisner "I have interviewed every Prime Minister from Louis St Laurent forward. After a while asking questions becomes a bit old hat and I feel in recent years I have been losing my edge by not hitting them all with the hard questions that should be asked."
He says the  talk show business has given him a great deal  over the years "It has been a lot of fun I have made some very good friends and also offended a good many along the way. That’s the territory that comes with being the messenger."
His work on and off the air  led to his  receiving the  Lifetime Achievement Award from the Radio and Television News Directors Association.
But if people think  he will be quiet,  well,  put away the champagne folks, it’s too early to plan any celebration "I won’t be quitting the editorials on Opinion250, if anything this new found time allows me to ramp up in that department. As for my audience, I’ll miss you all, over the years it was you who gave me the desire to get up in the morning and head off to work to create a voice for the average person of this city.  It was a responsibility I  carried with  pride, and one that  has given me great satisfaction."

Well that’s sad, I always looked forward to the live open mike shows. Now I guess we’ll just have to sit in the dark with just hearing things from the grapevine. I know I will miss the show, it’s just too bad you couldn’t interview her highness Ms Green who bashes the Citizen for the title on the front page of the paper the other day. I believe she even called some residents of Prince George “Stupid” I think she has a long career ahead of her (tongue in cheek)

A great many thanks you for all the different articles and show’s and interviews you put on and the different problems you championed ..I always felt you gave a full 100%…May it all go great on your next en-devour and give you as much fulfillment as what you have left behind for all of us readers and listeners..

Hugh Morrow.

Agreed, this is a sad day. No more clicking on the microphone at 9 a.m. to hear the show. I was married years ago to a radio guy who did the morning show on 94X. He was perpetually irritated by Ben, called him Grumpy Old Man and made many on-air jokes at Ben’s expense which just made me like Ben even more. Clearly, Ben disrupted the masses more than a few times. Farewell to honest questions and face-forward facts about local politics.

My last wish for Ben Meisner, please stay on Green’s tail and don’t let her shake you off!

Thank you Ben

Radio talk show will be missed your effort to get the news out and try to connect the little people with the issues will leave a big hole. Thanks Ben for your work and effort to keep live radio alive in PG

Thanks Ben, always a great listen!!! Keep up the great reads!!! Appreciate all your work.

Great talk show always! Great host! Thanks Ben!

It was my honor and pleasure to wake up every morning and be behind the scenes of the legendary “Meisner Show”. Where some people are unreachable in there fields and career positions, Ben knew their direct line by heart and would share a private joke with them at a moments notice. Ben asked what needed be asked, said what needed to be said and made sweat those who were already panicked (in or out of the studio). I consider it a priviledge to be you final producer/operator.

Thank you Mr. Meisner

J.D.

I think you should open up another crazy willies.

You will be missed Ben. When you had controversial guests and issues, the show was great. You had some good guests and asked the tough questions that needed to be asked.

Unfortunately, there were far too many fluff and advertising segments and I found myself changing the radio station for those. If you lost any edge, it was when you were doing these segments.

At least with your written editorial pieces, you can stick to the more controversial issues of the day.

Thanks Ben.

Thanks very much Ben, 38 years is a long time and you will be missed.
And Imorge, Target would be too big a competitor, I think…………

Will miss the radio show.

Thanks Ben for your 38 yrs of quality talk show hosting…. you will be greatly missed! but happy to know you will stay with Opinion 250…..many folks in 250 area rely on your website for reporting on the most recent news, for answers to tough questions. Folks know you will dig deep into issues of concern to Citizens and I hope you will continue to hold all politicians feet to the fire….I have no doubt you will continue to raise the profile of Opinion 250 and carry on delivering the news and views with the same tenacity as you always do. Thanks for being there for all of us!

Thank you Ben and everyone at Opinion 250 for all of your hard work over the years with the Meisner Show. Recently I have had the privilege of filling in for Ben when he wasn’t able to be behind the microphone. I have to say that it gave me a whole new perspective on communicating with decision makers and people that possess a passion for a cause or interest item. I first met Ben a number of years ago while working in radio and I can say that without a doubt he is a no holds barred person who calls it the way he sees it and I have the utmost respect for him for that. I was never going to be another Ben, but I do want to thank him for having the faith to invite me back on numerous occasions to fill in as the guest host of the Meisner Show.

Thank you Ben – Ron Gallo

That’s sad for us Ben, but you have a life too. Thank you for all you have done. I hope another hard questioning radio personality will be ble to do somethng similar. Best wishes to you.

I’m only in my early 20’s right now, with a lot left to learn, not only about myself but my surroundings. But after reading and listening to all of your thoughts on life, business and politics, I feel like you’ve put me ahead of the game.

I’m still going to be an Opinion250 junkie, so please don’t be a stranger.

Thanks for everything :) – K.

Thanks Ben…you were the best! Straight to the point and got to the bottom of things. I echo the thoughts of everyone on here as well…you will be missed but glad that you are staying on with Opinion 250 with the up-to-date news. All the best!

Sorry to see you go off the air Ben, however Im sure that you will be able to **rattle some chains** through Opinion 250.

More time for investigative reporting, etc;

Keep up the good work.

It was always a pleasure to listen to your radio show Ben, I loved how you delivered a “no guff” type of show and how you put the provincial “royalty” on the spot, it was one of your most endeaing qualities, to be able to get to the point and not take no for an answer. I will miss your shows. well done.

I enjoyed the Meisner show for the great debates and information that one wouldn’t hear elsewhere. Its to bad though that the CFIS station didn’t have much range unlike the old AM format. In recent year it was hard to listen to the show unless one was right downtown.

That said it would be great to see Ben get more involved in politics with his extra time… maybe help get a middle class oriented free enterprise party going before the premier steals the label to try and win the next election? A possible WAC of the modern era….

I just want to thank you Mr. Meisner, and wish you all the best always!!!
