Port of Prince Rupert Now Fastest Growing Container Port in North America
Prince Rupert, B.C.- The Prince Rupert Port Authority says 2011 saw record growth and a significant expansion of its economic impact. Details of the Port Authority’s activities and financials were discussed during its Annual Public Meeting, held yesterday at the Crest Hotel in Prince Rupert.
A total of 19.3 million tonnes were processed by the port’s terminal operators in 2011, representing an increase of over 17% from the 2010 figure. Total revenues for 2011 reached $26.2 million, an increase of over 33% from 2010. The Port of Prince Rupert’s operations directly created 920 full-time jobs in B.C. since 2009, bringing total employment from Port economic activity to over 2,300.
"We’ve heard a lot about the Port’s operational and commercial successes, and its significant role in anchoring and enabling Canada’s trade," said Don Krusel, President and CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority, to the more than 100 who attended the meeting.
"I hope you find it as exciting as we do, and I hope you feel as proud as we do, because this is your Port too and we should all take credit for its success. The Port of Prince Rupert is truly beginning to capitalize on the potential that this community always knew it had."
The dramatic growth at Fairview Terminal in 2011, which saw total volume grow by over 20% from 2010, has helped make Prince Rupert the fastest growing container port in North America.
The Annual Public Meeting also provided an opportunity to highlight the Port’s Community Investment Fund and its 2011 recipients. The fund was established in 2009 to improve and enhance the quality of the cultural, educational, health, welfare and civic aspects of life in the region. A total of eight local organizations received $539,000 in combined donations during 2011.
"This fund commits a portion of our net income to investments into legacy community projects that visibly improve the quality of life right here in this region," said Krusel. "I want to echo my excitement about engaging with the organizations that are delivering these projects to local residents, and thank them for stepping up with their time, effort and ideas to make a difference."

Mighty easy way to put the Yankees nose outa joint. Should be interesting how they will whine about this.
I think the ‘Yankees’ are already starting something. I can’t remember where I heard/read it but apparently they want some sort of subsidy because Rupert is ‘stealing’ their business.
Seems people forget that the Port of Prince Rupert Terminal Operator, is Maher Terminals of New Jersey. They invested $60 Million dollars in this port, and without the American investment it would have never got off the Ground.
In addition 90% of the containers that come through Prince Rupert go to the American Midwest, and Eastern US.
In addition the Port of Prince Rupert just signed a 5 year contract with coal shippers in Wyoming, and there will be approx 2.5 Million tonnes of coal from America to Pr Rupert.
In addition, the majority shareholders in CN Rail are Americans, and for all intents and purposes CN Rail is run out of Chicago Illinois.
So maybe before you knock the Americans you should check out who your best customers are.
Palopu – why let the facts get in the way of a good opinion?
